Black Jack (TV) Black Jack is my favourite characted among the ones created by Osamu Tazuka, the greatest Japanese mangaka (he's called the "Manga no Kamisama", meaning "The God of Manga"). Maybe, the greatness of this character came from the medic studies Tezuka took before starting the profession which would have made him famous. This anime is pretty good, and coldn't be otherwise since it's based on one of the greatest manga ever made, but the original work is much better imho, mabe because it's aimed to an older audience. |

Bleach (TV) Twitter comment_ Some really good elements (good female characters, for once, in a shounen, cool fights and some interesting relationship like Ichigo-Rukia and Rukia-Renji), but I can't take it too seriously since characters are too overpowered, especially the main one. I like some characters enough to keep me interested, though (Nell, Grimmjow and Ulquiorra among the newest ones, even if my favourite are Rukia and Renji, not Ichigo anymore since he lately suffers of the "main character syndrome", AKA=he's almost invincible -__-' ). Anyway, I think that Bleach it's a good mix of dramatic, romantic and comical situations, but sometimes there are too many fights and the second (canon, I don't watch Bleach fillers) story arc is too similar to the first one, so far (I watched up to episode 195). I'll restart watching it as soon as this second, canon story arc is concluded. |

Dear Brother (TV) The manga is wonderful... it made me cry. :'( I'm liking the anime too, even if it's slow and too long, in my opinion, for a manga like this. From a technical and artistic point of view, it is really well done (especially the character design) even if it tends to overuse animated sequences; the animation of the characters' hair is awesome. |

Inuyasha (TV) I watched many Italian dubbed episodes a long time ago, but watching this anime in its original language is a lot better so I started again from the beginning. Albeit often repetitive, I really like a few things about InuYasha: Kikyo's character (tragic, romantic, and even evil, she has one of the most complex characterization among Rumiko Takahashi's characters); Shippo (he's adorable); the interaction between Inuyasha and Kagome, which is funny even if not really original. UPDATE: I've recently started watching this anime again, since I never finished it. After all these years, its mostly episodic structure bothers me even more than before, and I find it overall simplistic, but it's still enjoyable for all the Japanese mythological references, if nothing else. |

Naruto Shippūden (TV) I'm up to the Sasuke-Itachi fight, and I've now put it on "stop" again. The problems with this anime are many: fillers (even if they are getting a bit better lately, since they are using original characters like the Jinchuuriki), sometimes slow pacing, inconsistent artworkss, not always good animations, colour choices in some episodes and music (especially in the first part of Shippuuden, the newest tracks are better). The openings and endings aren't always well-done, either, which too much SasuNaru fan service in most of them, even if the latest 2 are really good. The soundtrack itself isn't bad, even if not as good as the the first three ones, it's between decent and good... the problem is more about how the scores are used in the show. The artworks, but even more the colour choices aren't as good as hoped, and the animation is a bit of hot or miss... with some good touches here and there, though. But the worst part are the filler: some little bits of them are good, but the whole arcs with filler characters... well, I can't really stand them anymore. :/ I skipped all of them, of course, but it's still annoying. Another bad thing is the whole censorship about Shikamaru (who already read the Asuma arc in the manga or watched the anime knows what I'm talking about, but I won't spoiler about it here): that part was much cooler and had an impact on a whole another level in the manga. Too bad, since this one was one of the few I really liked in Shippuuden. :( What I really like, instead, is how the made the Kakashi Gaiden, Jiraiya vs. Pain and Sasuke vs. Itachi parts. Anyway, this anime is still worth watching for Naruto or shounen fans in general, if not for anything else for its always good, if not excellent, original dubbing (even if I don't like Obito and young Sasuke's voices). |

One Piece (TV 1999) --UPDATE: just finished watching the Punk Hazard story arc, and can't wait to see Dressrosa too! The 15th anime anniversary opening is quite cool, by the way!-- Overall, the One Piece anime is a really good TV series with a great cast of seiyuu, nice background music and a couple of awesome OPs and EDs (my favourites are the first ending, "Memories", and the last opening, "We Fight Together"). However, there are some cuts and censorship here and there, especially in the beginning and in the Marineford story arc, that bothered me. I would suggest this series to any One Piece fan anyway, especially the Water 7 / Enies Lobby story arcs, which are the best adaptations of the manga so far, in my opinion. |

Akihabara @ DEEP (live-action TV) The characters of this drama are really funny, and even if the "otaku" theme is dealt with a far from realistic approach, it's still interesting. It mixes dramatic moments with funny ones quite well, even if it's a bit too "over the top" in some scenes. The "zombi infection episode" is priceless. XD Don't miss it if you're an otaku (in the wide sense of the term), since it would be worth it for the Gundam cameos alone. |

I recomend it! ^^ |

Anne of Green Gables (TV) Another masterpiece I've finally seen in Japanese! :D The maturity of the story and the characters is amazing, everyone should see this rare gem. And don't think it's only for children; actually, the point of view is more from an adult standpoint. Furthermore, this is the first Japanese anime series which made me say: wow, backgrounds look like Bambi's. O__O |

Attack on Titan (TV) All the characters feel mono-dimensional except Levi; however, he's bi-dimensional at best (even if this first season doesn't cover enough of the manga to really tell if he'll become a more interesting character later on). This is a pretty dark and dramatic story, but the humour, when present, is forced and out of place. That aside, the animation is top-notch for action scenes (less for when the characters aren't just standing around talking about uninteresting stuff repetitively). Even better are the backgrounds and the soundtrack, which I really liked. Maybe, I'm a bit too old (and cynical) for this kind of story, but this anime felt like a watered-down, childish version of Evangelion. Of course, my knowledge of it is partial so take this comment with a grain of salt, but I didn't hear great things about the ending so I'm not really interested to watch more of it. |

Bakuman. (TV) The high vote is more for the source material (the manga from the same name) than for the anime itself which, even if well-done and animated, doesn't shiny in any particular aspect. It's still a good adaptation, though, but I would suggest the manga over it any day--a manga that deserved a higher budget for its animated version, but didn't get it maybe because, even if popular, it's still a niche work. |

Bokurano (TV) It was a bit boring at first, then around episode 10 it gets a lot better, and episodes 11-12 made me like it (I cried, not joking ^^' ). Furthermore, if you're an Akira Ishida fan like me this anime is a must-see: he play a really cold-hearted character in a perfect way. This seiyuu never finish to amaze me with his talent. :) Too bad they ruined it at the end (I need to read the manga, since it's different), or I would have rated it higher. |

There are melancholic, moving, slice-of-life and even funny moments--not to mention great action and crude scenes as well. The different ending for each episode is the proverbial icing on the cake--a bloody yet delicious cake. |

Death Note (TV) This anime put me on the hedge of the chair several times, made me laugh, love, hate, throw a pillow to the TV screen at one point and almost cry. Be prepared to see an anime which will stab your heart without pity at all, and several times. On a whole, Death Note is a story which apparently starts a bit stereotypical but soon shows its true face: it's unique thanks to a quite original point of view, and it has flawless directing, really good music, awesome art and animation. This anime will make you think about matters like what real justice is/should be and about the human condition, too. I didn't read all the manga, but I checked some key parts and in my opinion the anime is better, and this fact surprised me since it's the other way around most of the times when it comes to manga and anime based on them! In a word: it's a masterpiece. |

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (TV) Twitter comment_ Too derivative from other works and average plot and characters overall, but the anime adaptation is high quality (especially the backgrounds and some visual effects) and the interaction between the main trio of characters is funny--albeit simple--and their chemistry allowed for some genuinely funny and heart-warming scenes. And Nezuko is cute. ^^ Too bad for the rushed progression and excessive exposition, which kills the dramatic potential of both characters and scenes instead of enhancing it; some of the best parts of the anime, in fact, are the few silent ones with just music/songs accompanying the images (as it happened in the 19th episode, for example). With more "show, don't tell" and more time dedicated to develop characters and backstories, this could have been a much more compelling and emotional story, but this is an issue of the manga too (from what I saw myself and read around) so not the anime's fault by itself. That said, I'm still invested enough in the story to look forward the upcoming movie at least. |

Den-noh Coil (TV) A really original take on sci-fi/virtual reality themes (bit also about everyday live ones, as you can understand later in the anime), from the point of view of a group of (almost teenagers) children. Desert Punk (TV) It starts really funny (beware though, it's crammed with ecchi scenes and characters), develops in an interesting way introducing a new main character that I liked a lot, and at about 2/3 of the series it turns someway dramatic. Too bad I really hated the ending (knowing that the manga hasn't ended yet made less hard for me to accept this made-up ending, though). The one thing I can't complain about is the quality of the animation, which is outstanding most of the time. I also appreciated the first opening, quite unique for an anime, and the colour choices for both the characters and the backgrounds. |

Eureka Seven (TV) In this anime, the animation and the attention for the details on the backgrounds are outstanding, the character design is very good, the music and songs are exceptional, the cast of characters is appealing and the plot interesting and without boring parts. The peace of the anime is fast, but it still has it's good deep moments, and its mood is a perfect mix between serious and comical situations. I assure you that many will like the main character (dubbed by Yuko Sanpei, a young but really skilled seyuu) from the very first episode, and if not they'll like at least one of the secondary ones, at least. Finally, the opening and ending sequences are amazing both animation and songs-wise. Too bad the ending, or better the last 10-15 minutes are sappy, stupid and a bit random, or this anime would have been a masterpiece. :( |

Anyway I loved its stunning animation, the great background music, the awesome original dubbing and the many reference to otaku culture and beyond that. I'm particularly fond of the Kaworu character, so I like him a lot in this movie and I particularly appreciated how his relationship with Shinji was depicted. I noticed a bigger use of CG graphics in this movie, though compared to the first two ones, and some of it was a bit too intrusive; I also found the screenplay a bit confusing and too open-ending (maybe, this movie and the fourth, final one were intended to be only one, and were separated later?) Anyway it's still a must-watch, even if I can't consider it a masterpiece as stand-alone movie, unlike the two previous ones. |

Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Twitter comment_ According to many people this was the best 2003 anime, and I've to agree with them. Even if I believe that the manga, and consequently the new animated series, have a much better plot and characters developments, I still have fond memories of this first FMA anime. It's as good as the manga in the beginning, but when it starts diverging from it it becomes less enjoyable, even if it's still very good (except for the "parallel world" sub-plot and some character developments I didn't appreciate). The animation, music, openings/endings and directing of this anime are among the best ones I ever saw in any animated series. To people that have never read the manga and wanted to start reading it or watch the new animated series based on it, I suggest them to start from this one instead, since they could not like this first FMA "version" anymore if they go too further into the manga/new anime plot and characterizations... but if they only want to know the REAL Fullmetal Alchemist, then the best choice is Brotherhood, or even better the manga itself. |

It pains me that such a great manga was adapted so poorly; in the end, I only liked how Al and the Homunculi were made (visually-wise). Furthermore, this movie's screenplay is a total mess, Ed's characterization (or what's left of it) appears naive and even weird considering he's supposed to be younger, and there is too much focus on the (badly directed/acted) drama whereas the manga has also hilarious moments. And What is that Winry? Also, we barely see a cat in the whole movie (nitpicking I know--but not really since little nuisances and quirks are what makes characters unique and loveable in the end). Important characters completely cut out, and a myriad of other problems. What a disappointment. :( |

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (TV) Twitter comment_ Not as good as the manga even if I gave them both the same vote, but I wanted to put this second FMA animated series a step higher than the old anime, since despite a worse directing and pacing the real FMA stories and characters at the end make the difference, and this new anime closely follow them, ending included. Anyway, what I really appreciated in this second Hagaren anime is the character design, the soundtrack, the voice acting and, of course, the plot and the characters developments. It has some really good openings and endings, too. It could have been better, but we FMA fans can consider ourself really lucky for this second manga adaptation. Also, I give this news series extra points for the special episodes and the animated 4-koma omake, which are great. I hope the new movie will be as good as the new series, and not as the previous Hagaren movie, which disappointed me a lot. |

(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) I liked the screenplay a lot and found it to be quite original. Unfortunately the animation and art in general, even if excellent, is not up to it, and I didn't like some elements of the characterization of the main male character: they should have shown his more serious side from the beginning, to make him (and the ending) more believable. After all, the fact that he was some way connected to the main character was given away from a couple of silhouettes. ;) This problem aside, the movie is a beautiful love story, or better about the first love of a high school girl (a really funny and likeable character, by the way). It has lots of hilarious moments, too, and I think that the latter are the best parts, actually (despise the plot has a dramatic, if not tragic side too). I also think that the directing is a bit too slow without it being necessary, especially at the beginning, but it could be just a matter of tastes. |

Hikaru no Go (TV) This is the first anime TV series I watched in original language with English subtitles... I started with a bang! :D Hightly recommended since it's one of the few anime which isn't worse than the manga it is based on even if the ending has been shortened and cut. Anyway it has a pretty original plot and Sai (one of the main characters) is one of the most handsome, tragic yet funny character ever created in an anime. The Go game theme is correctly introduced (even if with a supernatural twist) and deeply developed. and it becomes a starting point from a more wider theme of characters growth, through their friendship and rivalry. Finally, the soundtrack, openings and endings of this anime are really emotional. |

Hunter X Hunter (TV 1999) Twitter comment_ Update: please keep in mind that I wrote this comment before watching the new anime adaptation of HxH (the 2011 one), but I still suggest to see this anime, too, since it's good by itself even if less faithful to the manga (if you'll decide to do so, I suggest you to watch this one first). Also, please notice that when I wrote the original comment I still liked Naruto (I didn't appreciate--to use an euphemism--at least half of the post time-skip arcs, especially the last ones, and its ending). [ORIGINAL COMMENT STARTS HERE] In my opinion this anime marks the passage from "old" shounen like Dragonball and "modern" ones like Naruto. Its target isn't as wide as Naruto's, but in the same time it has more funny moments and at the end it's really addictive and enjoyable. Some parts are still a bit random and only few characters have a solid and believable background (and a real character development--but this anime adapt only a part of the manga, so it's to be expected), but there is a lot of adventure! A must see for anyone between 10 and 20 (and even older or you'll miss the wonderful characters that Killua and Hisoka are! ^^ ). |

Hunter × Hunter (TV 2011) Updated comment after second (partial) rewatch: I completely changed my mind about Alluka's introduction and I don't consider it a plot hole anymore since Killua did mention that he probably forgot about her since Illumi had implanted a needle in his brain and he was practically controlling his emotions and anything related; I also changed my opinion about Gon's characterization since during this second rewatch I understood the character better and I don't consider forced anymore his reaction after the events revolving Kite. These things considered, I also changed the rating from "excellent" to "masterpiece" (even if this new anime likely covers just around half of the full manga--hoping Togashi will complete it one day). Twitter comment (new)_ After my rewatch of the #HxH 2011 #anime I "rate" it higher than the first time: I had forgotten an important detail about Killua so I don't think there's a plot hole anymore, and I also understand Gon's character better now. Watch it if you haven't already: it's a masterpiece! L change the WorLd (live-action movie) Kenichi Matsuyama starring as L is a must see as for the two previous movies, but since this one diverges a lot from the original Death Note story, his character does the same too, unfortunately. Speaking like L, I would say that his counterpart in this movie only resembles the actual, canon character around seventy-percent physically, and forty-percent psychologically. It isn't the actor's fault in my opinion, though, but the screenplay's, which forces him into a too bi-dimensional character who develops a more human side throughout the movie. Problem is, the canonical L isn't bi-dimensional at all, and not so emotionally-flat as the movie implies him to be; L--the real L--isn't always serious, isn't so naive about emotions and social relationships, and isn't a loner who wants to work always alone. On the contrary, he can be quite playful, even childish at times, can smile in an impertinent way, is much more dynamic (and doesn't get tired for just running--how could he, having mastered such a difficult martial art as capoeira?), can joke about falling in love (do you remember his line to Misa?) and often collaborates with others to resolve cases (from Watari to Naomi Misora; from the Task Force members to Light himself, whom he even considered a friend in a way despise his suspicions towards him). At least in my opinion, L wasn't socially and emotionally impaired, but just out of place and maybe lonely in a world where he could found really few people intelligent enough for him to relate with... which doesn't mean that he didn't care about people at all. L can be a cold, logical character--he is for the most part, so much to appear amoral in some instances--but this aspect of his personality was blown out of proportion to give this movie a starting point to develop a character whom didn't need to be developed at all since he was already well-written to begin with, and whose cold side was just an aspect of a much more complex personality. Unfortunately, the movie starts with the wrong premises, and even if the actor playing L is great, he can't do much when the screenplay isn't. That said, I still suggest L's fans to watch this movie at least once; I don't think we could ever get a better actor starring as L, and I do hope they will give him another opportunity to shine in this role by adapting for the screen the novel "Another Note", in which he would also play L's alter-ego and rival, Beyond Birthday, in a thriller that could work really well as a movie as long as it stayed true to the novel plot and to the characterizations of its protagonists. |

(The) Legend of the Galactic Heroes (OAV) This anime is so awesome that it is a shame that it is so little known outside of Japan. Based on a series of novels, even if it looks like a space opera at first its science fiction elements are more just setting than real elements in the plot. So, I would recommend this series more to historical/political and drama stories fans than to science fiction ones. Actually, I would recommend it to everyone who is older than 16-17, but this is a whole different matter. Anyway, if you are expecting your "regular" anime, but only with slightly better characters and plot, then you are way far from understanding what this series really is. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is so good that I'm thinking of rearranging all my ratings because this gem surpasses several of the anime I already rated as masterpiece. But I won't do it for now... maybe, when I'll reach 300 anime in "seen all". ;) Anyway, if you're considering watching this anime and you aren't sure if it's worth it (110 episode of a deep, complicated and often slow-paced anime full of text and dialogues isn't exactly something for everyone), at least believe me about one point: it is old BUT well-animated. It couldn't seem at first, since it is old and all, but I read people complaining about the animation of this series and, well, they are plain crazy... or better, they don't know where to look. Artworks consistency apart (in 99% of the episodes!!!), which is something that I found in REALLY few anime (even among masterpieces), the animation of little details in this series is outstanding. I won't tell where and why, though, just discover it by yourselves. :P But, please, trust me (I watched 250+ complete anime series/movies, I should know ;) ). That said, let me spend few words about the story of this anime. First of all, it being based on a series of novels is a great plus since the plot and the characterization of every character, even the secondary ones, are top notch. Every detail is really important, the slightest ones too; furthermore, this is one of the really few anime aimed to an adult audience for the seriousness and the maturity of the plot itself, and not for extremely violent scenes (which are still there, since it also is about war) or sex ones (which are implied, anyway). Great characters, great design, great music (with a huge use of classical themes, which give this anime an unique feeling), a wide plot and good animation make this anime a masterpiece for sure. It could seem slow at first, but it never gets boring if you want a deep anime. On the contrary, it keeps being interesting and exciting until the very end, and at that point you could still want more; it always feels fresh. Incredible. Unique. Monumental. Epic. LEGENDARY. |

What I liked less is the somewhat feminist ending (and I'm a woman so go figure), with the main male character just forgotten and never really flashed out. I have some minor problems with one of the female main characters too, since her development wasn't completely coherent toward the ending in my opinion, considering her base personality. At any case, this is an anime to watch for sure, and a pretty original one too (how many anime have a South American setting?) |

That said, here you are my general comments about Gundam 00: the beginning of this anime is interesting, and luckily the main character isn't emo at all even if he could seem at first (he a really serious character, but he isn't boring or mono-dimensional and his seriousness is justified by his tragic past, furthermore he develops nicely throughout the whole story)--the other three main characters (four, actually, but I won't say more to avoid spoilers) are really good too, well-characterized even if you could not like one or two of them at first (my favourite one is Lockon... and his adorable Haro!); the side characters are good, too, even considering some annoying ones who still have a role to fulfil so they are bearable in the end--I didn't notice any useless ones or any noticeable fan service, either; the plot isn't particularly original, but I found it quite inspiring since it showed the creation of the first space colonies and the first mass-travels in space--the sci-fi fan in me was really pleased (it made me reflect about the future of the humanity more than once); the overall theme of this Gundam is peace, and I liked how it was dealt with--in contrast, this anime shows many of the ugly faces of war, too, and it does it discretely well (the main character was a child soldier and terrorist, for example); the music, character design and animation are great when not excellent, as in the movie and in a couple of moments of the TV series, too--there are some space battle sequences that are breathtaking, and some of the artistic designs are gorgeous (for example, the Gundam covered in flowers); the Gundam designs are also great, and I liked how they were well differentiated in battles, with each one having its role. Overall, even if this series didn't emotionally resonate with me as strongly as Gundam Seed did, in the end I enjoyed it as much, even if for partially different reasons. |

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (TV) If you never saw any Gundam series, you could start with this one. It's great in everything: characters, plot, animation, music and songs. The plot mixes several genres, from action to romance, from drama to science-fiction. Moreover, Gundam Seed deals with important themes like war, racism, prejudices and bioethics in a quite deep way. Anyway, I believe that the main theme of this anime, and the strongest one (it is what got me hooked), is the beautiful, troubled yet strong friendship between the two main characters, Kira and Athrun (the latter dubbed by the REALLY skilled Akira Ishida). Their friendship opens and later closes the anime in a perfect way, thanks to the excellent screenplay, and it is symbolized by the cute robot-bird that Kira received from Athrun as a present, before the latter departed from his home when they were children, leaving Kira behind... Present which, in my opinion, is a metaphor of childhood and innocence. Overall, this anime is impressive and Athrun is still one of my favourite characters even after all these years. |

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (TV) Not an excellent anime as its direct predecessor, but still interesting for the themes it deals with, some taken from the first series but explored even deeper, in a way that leads to horrific situations (psychological-wise, mostly). For Akira Ishida fans, Destiny is a must-see for his performance alone as Athrun Zala, which is as good as always albeit the screenplay isn't as good as in Gundam Seed. For example, Destiny starts too slow while its ending is far too abrupt, so I suggest watching the Final Plus episode instead than episode 50 (Final Plus is an alternate ending, but more than being different it's just longer and better developed). Furthermore, I didn't find the new main character, Shin, as interesting as the other two ones, but this is a matter of tastes, mostly. Still, this new anime doesn't introduce strong ties between characters as the first one did, even if the writers tried something with Shin and, later, Athrun (a bit too much with him, actually, I think at least one was just fanservice and unnecessary). A bit too repetitive for not Gundam fans, or even for Gundam fans that aren't much attached to characters as Athrun, Kira, Kagalli and Lacus, Destiny is only to be viewed after the first series at any case, since as a stand alone it doesn't work well, despite all the (annoying) recaps and flashback about the prequel. About the music and animation, the former is good, with nice insert songs here and there, but I didn't like the new OPs and EDs songs much (they recycled the animations for them, too); animation-wise, there are great scenes here and there, especially during action-packed sequences, not only Gundams or other mechas-related but on foot, too. I still like the character design even if a bit too shoujo-like for some characters, and the backgrounds do their job. |

As a stand alone you wouldn't understand much of what is going on, anyway if you don't want to see the whole Destiny series, but are curious about the ending, I would still suggest to watch this alternate ending episode. |

Monster (TV) "Monster" starts slow but after episodes 27-28 the pace becomes faster and much more enjoyable. It's a complex anime with a wide and deep plot and many, many characters; at the end it's really worthy watching for the humanity of the characters, the connections with real life and real historical events (used in a very intelligent way in the plot) and for the amazing screenplay. The effort they put in this anime in each detail, animation and music is outstanding. Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit (TV) This anime has so many good points: wonderful, paintings-like landscapes and backgrounds; top-notch animation and cool fighting scenes (not an action anime, but the fighting scenes are several and among the best ones I ever saw in animation form); CG used in a smart and not intrusive way; awesome color design; nice character design (even if I didn't like much it, at first); not a really complex plot but still good, more focused on characters development than on the plot itself; quite a high number of well-written and well-developed characters for a series of only 26 episodes (I liked all of them, in a way or another, except one who wasn't developed enough, imho); an interesting and very detailed scenario/world divided into two sub-worlds (one is based on ancient, imperial Japan, but even if it has historical themes it is still a parallel world to the real one, the other is a parallel world of the main world of the anime and is inhabited with natural and elemental spirits); inspiring soundtrack by the great Kenji Kawai. In a word: excellent. |

Mushi-Shi (TV) The first episodes felt too-slow paced to me, but it soon got better and better, so I ended up liking this a lot, especially after learning more about the main character. A bit episodic at first, toward the end a main plot shapes up and it gets much more enjoyable--that said, many episodes are excellent by themselves. Naruto (TV) The manga is better, anyway the anime has great musics and some really good opening / ending themes (especially "Wind", "Yellow Moon", "Nakushita Kotoba", "Haruka Kanata" and "Yura Yura"). Moreover, the seyuu for the characters are exceptional and all of them did a really, really good job (after seeing more than 200 whole anime movies/series, I'm not afraid to say that Naruto could have the best cast ever... I'm talking about the Japanese one, of course; the Italian dubbing is awful). My favourite voice actors/actress are: Takeuchi Junko (Uzumaki Naruto), Akira Ishida (Sabaku no Gaara), Shoutarou Morikubo (Shikamaru), Paku Romi (Temari) and Kujira (Orochimaru). The only real bad thing about Naruto is, or better are the filler episodes, which almost ruined it. They are horrible most of the time and I gave up seeing all of them. I put this series under "seen all" anyway, since they don't really count, do them? ;) Finally, I higly reccomend to first read the manga and only then to see the anime, because the latter it's a bit edited even in the Japanese version and there are some changes here and there. |

Neighborhood Story (TV) What started as a quite good adaptation of an already awesome manga ended as a partial disappointment. Changed scenes and completely cut content (including an important character, who doesn't appear at all in the anime) makes this adaptation a quite inferior work in comparison to the manga. A wasted opportunity since the particular art style of the manga was adapted quite well and the voice actors are great, too. A special mention for the OP and EDs, which are quite good in their quirkiness. |

Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) One of the very few anime good dubbed in Italian language... but the original is still better, of course. ;) For the huge influence this anime had and is still having on mecha series (and anime in general) I should rate NGE with "masterpiece". Anyway, since I prefer rating the anime I see more according to my tastes than to a hypothetical objective value, I'll stick with "excellent" for now since there are anime I like more. Evangelion is really original, but imho it somewhat lacks that "well-rounded" feeling that I got from the anime I voted as masterpiece, even when they weren't as important and unique as NGE in the panorama of Japanese animation. Still, Evangelion broke many standards and innovated a lot, so my opinion about the rating could change, one day. On a side note, its opening is still one of the best ever made in my opinion... but who doesn't love it? ^^ |

The use of real news throughout the OAVs is a genial idea that expresses its full potential and purpose when made-up news are used in the ending sequence, making them feel real, too. The ending itself gave me goosebumps. Otaku no Video is a must watch for any anime fan: it's informative, funny, even melancholic in a way and, most of all, it's a celebration of our passion and hobbies, without leaving aside the dark sides of them, which are always there as an undertone. However, it ends on a hopeful, happy note that will make most otaku, or more simply anime and manga fans, dream. |

It plays with yaoi/yuri stereotypes in a quite intelligent way and is more -about- fan-service than -with- fan-service, which makes it potentially enjoyable for a male audience too even if that isn't its main target as a shoujo. It's also really well animated and the pace of the story is perfect. Great voice acting too (even if this is pretty normal with original dubbed anime), and the characters are unforgettable--my favourite ones were the lead male character and the twins. Finally, a couple of episodes were better than the rest of the series imho and they would deserve an even higher rating. |

As you can tell from its title, it starts and mostly develops around the concept of the "paranoia" type of psychosis, but it also deals with the problems of the often chaotic and frantic modern society. It's also an anime that you can better appreciate if you know some fetish of part of the Japanese people (for example the love for RPG videogames) and the process of creation of some job like animation. Definitely a must-see and a masterpiece. |

Patapata Hikōsen no Bōken (TV) Based on two classic Jules Vernes' novels, this really well-animated anime is able to convey the sci-fi themes so dear to the renowned writer. Even if the character design could seem too generic, most scenes are quite well-directed and the music is often really good and used in a way similar to classic Disney animated movies. However, the screenplay is too hasty sometimes and it leaves implied plot elements that could have been explored further; furthermore, to adapt the story for it to be understandable for a young audience, some elements were oversimplified. That said, this series is still a must-see for adventure lovers, especially if you want to live the romantic dream of people longing to fly in a world where technology still not allowed it. A special mention for the main villain: I found him to be written brilliantly, better than what many anime out there have to offer. This is a story of three brothers fighting for their dreams throughout an adventure that spans over more than a decade and that will put them even against each other sometimes. But, most of all, this is a story about one of men's biggest dream: the one to fly in the sky. |

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (movie) Really detailed and fluid animation (the water is amazing... at Studio Ghibli they are crazy °_° ), fantastic directing, backgrounds all drawn by pastels (look really pretty), perfect original dubbing, some very beautiful characters (Ponyo's mother symbolizes the beauty, richness and generosity of the sea, it's really incredible the way she was realized), Ponyo herself is really sweet (but, among other things, she also represents the potentially destructive strength of the ocean), secondary characters who are funny or make you think... and I appreciated a lot the many things not said but left to the imagination of the viewer. A fairytale for both children and adults, wonderfully drawn and animated and with a soundtrack which is as good as other aspects of the movie (if not more). |

What I really appreciated, though, was the artistic direction, art style (both characters and backgrounds), the intelligent use of stop motion, the often really good animation and the background music. This anime re-invented a genre, and even if you, like me, don't like its "moe" subtext and the somewhat depressing characters (the only one I really liked was the protagonist's mother), it still is a must see for any fan of Japanese animation. |

Many could call this "just a children story", but it's a really deep one, suitable for people of every age and informative of dark chapters of Italian history. This is a fictional story which feels real, with true historical events in the background, in a setting made of beautiful landscapes, blossoming trees... and raining blood. A masterpiece. |

(The) Sky Crawlers (movie) Aside the really good animation, soundtrack and the overall high production value, the movie is way too long in my opinion. The first half of it is quite boring, even if it gets better if the movie is watched a second watch, since you actually understand what it goes on. Even if they are coherent with the story themes and setting, I found the characters pretty boring and lifeless. About the plot, it has really interesting premises but in the end it never develops them to their full potential, being reduced to a pretty much pointless, cyclic story. You could find metaphorical meanings in this movie, but it's far from being entertaining and enjoyable, but just depressive more than anything else. Finally, the fact that the characters, even after understanding what they really are, not really rebel against their condition, isn't really realistic; it's like if the movie only shows the first half of a bigger story and the viewers end up expecting more from it (unless they chose to read the movie as an allegory of Japanese society, or better, of some of its values... but it would be better to read the book this movie is based on, too, to better understand its original author's message). |

Spirited Away (movie) Twitter comment_ I believe this is one of the best Japanese animated movies of all time... actually, I believe this is one of the best movies ever made in general, animated or not, and not only among Japanese ones. With the train scene alone Hayao Miyazaki managed to animate a dream (and, maybe, a deep metaphor of life), and the whole movie is a piece of art. The adventure of a lost girl in a fascinating yet scary world intertwines with Japanese folklore, life messages and a never really forgotten encounter between the main character and a spirit of nature. The animation, directing and music are outstanding: the more you'll watch this exciting, sometimes funny, and overall melancholic movie, the more you'll love it. |

Star Driver (TV) Derivative yet original in its own way, SD is like a mix between a mecha show, Sailor Moon and a comedy school story. It features the typical trio (two boys and a girl) and a (sci-fi) main plot intertwined with romantic slice-of-life moments. Its mood can be funny, serious and even dramatic, and the cast counts many characters; this anime has something for almost anyone. I especially liked the main character and the animation of fights (not limited to the mechas ones) and special effects, which are often jaw-dropping (especially for the last episode). I also appreciated the use of music and even more of the four insert songs, which are quite beautiful in my opinion. :) |

That said, this arc is so ambitious it deserved more world-building to help feel the same connection the main character feels with this virtual world and its inhabitants and to avoid the necessity of info dumps towards the ending. With a more naturally-developed plot and fewer forced scenes, this arc had the potential to be as good as the very first one if not more, but make sure to watch it anyway since despite its faults, its sequels and conclusion are very good even considering the imperfect journey to get there. |

Tiger & Bunny (TV) Even if its main plot is a bit generic, and quite derivative from American Super Heroes, at first this anime really captures the interest of the viewers thanks to its awesome futuristic urban backgrounds, interesting character design, good CG, often awesome animation and an interesting setting (and quite original use of real life sponsors). What got me into it, tough, is the main character, Kotetsu: he has a clumsy yet loveable personality, and the relationship dynamics between him and the co-protagonist, Barnaby (called "Bunny" by his senpai XD ), are really enjoyable. Too bad the screenplay isn't well-planned: it is quite simple in the beginning, has a peak only around the 20th episode but by then there aren't enough episodes last to properly develop it, so the final part feels quite rushed. Add to it some bad written scenes, some too forced ones, and some that could be considered actual plot holes, plus a too silly ending that makes fun of the main character in a way that seemed out of place and too exaggerated to me, and you will understand why I didn't rated this higher despite I really liked some of its ideas and the main character of the story. I wish this anime could have had a better screenplay and overall plot... the way it was done is a semi-wasted opportunity, in my opinion. :( |

Toward the Terra (TV) This series is so rich with characters, ideas and themes that they could have done a 50+ episodes series instead of a 24 episodes one without problems. Instead, they chose to move through the awesome plot quite fast (the directing is great and the pace of the story perfect) leaving no space for fan-service of any sort. The result is a masterpiece that will leave you with much to think about even after the ending episode. This series is like a matrix for other series, like the manga it's based on was at its times. Watch it, especially if you love science fiction. Among the countless nice touches in this anime, I want to underline the many quotes from at least two literature classics (Peter Pan and Moby-Dick), which are perfectly merged in the plot. |

(The) Twelve Kingdoms (TV) After a slow beginning (I'm talking about the first 3-4 episodes) I started to enjoy this series a lot. It begins like a typical fantasy story, with a high school girl who is taken to a parallel world, but the anime soon shows its real traits: a historical-like drama with a fantasy setting. It's much more complex and deeper than it could seem in the beginning. The characters, the setting, the fantasy creatures and the backgrounds of this anime are really well done, the character design is good and consistent and the animation is on good levels. The music is great, one of the best soundtracks of the many series I watched! By the way, this anime is based on a series of Japanese fantasy novels, and despite my hate for fantasy novels that don't really feel like fantasy but only try to be it, I found both the plot and the characters of this anime believable. The Twelve Kingdoms is awesome, give it a try even if the ending is open (since the novels too aren't complete yet); if you can't stand open endings, see only up to episode 39, which in my opinion is the peak of the series and the one that won me a "masterpiece" rating for this series (it perfectly closes the most important story arc). By the way, even if dubbing a minor character, Akira Ishida is in this anime, and another character is dubbed but the great Kappei Yamaguchi (he is L's seiyuu, among many others)! ^^ |

Tytania (TV) *Repeats to herself: "I've only watched the first episode, I must refrain to already vote it as masterpiece"* :P So far it looks/sounds/tastes like Legend of the Galactic Heroes, I hope it'll stay like this until the end. *faints for excess of happiness* ... That was my first reaction to it. Unfortunately, this anime is just a prologue or what is, or could be, a much longer story... a good prologue, but still one. It adapts the first three novels (the only ones written so far) of a still ongoing novels series, so I won't rate this since it doesn't feel complete, but I still suggest it to people who liked Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Not set your expectations too high, though: other than being clearly incomplete story-wise, many episodes/events feel rushed, too. Anyway, it's still a must-see for space opera genre. :) |

Vampire Knight Guilty (TV) While the first series ended with a (hilarious XD ) shounen-ai scene, this other ending disappointed me and doesn't feel like an ending at all. Not only it is different, in some parts, from the correspondent part in the manga (from what I read around, at least), but it is also too open ended for my tastes. Maybe it's just because I only watched this series for the Zero character (who, for some reasons, reminded me of Kyo Soma of Fruits Basket, who is one of my most favourite characters ever) and in the end... no, I won't add anything else. ;) Anyway, I didn't take this anime seriously and just watched it for the lulz. I could check the manga to see how the story really ends and the various parts that were cut from the anime, though. All that said, I really liked the ending theme and animation of Guilty: it's quite beautiful and symbolic in my opinion. :) |

Xam'd: Lost Memories (ONA) Its screenplay can be confusing and it's quite derivative, yet its exceptional animation, good music, interesting character design and enjoyable plot and characters earned it a quite high rating. You'll find a bit of Eureka Seven in this, a lot from Ghibli movies, and something from other anime/studios, too, but it still has its own personality. I particularly liked the protagonist, whose character is well-balanced and believable in its grown throughout the story, and his parents: not many anime deal with nearly-divorced couples and their problems, after all! They main theme of this anime is sci-fi and fantasy, though, together with a bit of military elements as well. I loved the opening and the endings, and the directing... and the aforementioned exceptional animation: it was like watching a movie-quality anime, but it's actually a series! Studio Bones at its best, even if for not the most original story and setting. |

Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files (TV) I was worried about the last story arc and the ending since I read somewhere that they weren't as good as the rest of the series, but actually I found them better than the rest of the anime. In my opinion, the last story arc and the last 4-5 episodes in particular, albeit simple in the surface plot-wise, hide a deeper meaning about the characters and their grow: nothing too hard to understand of course, but still something only hinted to, thus something the viewers have to discovers for themselves. Analysing the series as a whole, even if it has a really simple and usually linear plot, with some flashbacks here and there, and it often uses really basic "shounen formulas", what you can really enjoy about it are its characters (especially Kurama, which isn't your usual bishionen, trust me on this). Togashi's talent for the action-adventure genre already shined in this early work of him, and even if Hunter x Hunter is better than Yu Yu Hakusho under almost every aspect, the latter still has something that makes it worth watching. After all, it deeply influenced later shounen, especially Bleach! |

Zipang (TV) I would have voted "masterpiece" if it was a full manga adaptation, but since it isn't and the ending is left open, the work feels a bit incomplete. Still a must see for sci-fi and history fans, though, for its really interesting premise and main theme: what would you do if you went back in time? Would you try to change history, or leave it as it is, as much as possible? And, if you would choose to change it, would it really be for the better? Such ethical and moral motifs, already complex by themselves, get even more complicated when you consider that the main characters are in the modern Japanese navy and are inspired by the concepts of peace and of its preservation, but will have to face the really different mentality of WWII Japanese people (and their enemies). Zipang is an anime with great characters and plot, detailed animation that underlines even the smaller emotions and gestures of the characters, making them feel alive, and a good soundtrack. Definitely, a solid show that made me want to read the manga, too, which I'll surely read as soon as I can. :) |

Ristorante Paradiso (TV) I only watched the first episode, and I couldn't enjoy it (mostly because I'm Italian, I guess ^^' ). Italian words are overused (their pronunciation is correct, but they are spoken in a quite "lifeless" way... to me, it sounds like the seiyuu aren't acting in italian but just reading lines -___-' ), Rome is depicted in a hilarious (read=untrue) way. Even if the backgrounds are beautiful, they give a false image of Rome, an image which doesn't suit a "realistic" anime like this at all. The "mood" given by those backgrounds is hilarious from an Italian point of view (I live in a city near Rome and I visited the capital countless times, so you can trust me here) since it is just too romantic and the Japanese point of view about Rome is too forced upon the viewer. Furthermore, "Casetta dell'Orso" isn't a name you would use for a restaurant in Rome... it would be better suited for an Alpine one, and even in that case we Italians would rather call a restaurant "Casa dell'Orso" over "Casetta dell'Orso" ("casetta" means "small house" and sounds too cheesy and awkward to be likely used for a restaurant name, especially for a high-class one like the one in this anime). Mind me, I can't exclude that a restaurant with a name similar to "Casetta dell'Orso" could exist in Rome, but as a symbolic/iconic name it totally fails. Also, "Orso" means "bear", and bears in Italy aren't animals associated with Rome at all, but more with the Abruzzo region, for example. Maybe, not-Italian or less nitpicking people than me can enjoy this anime anyway, but keep in mind that the image that it gives of Rome is false and biased from a Japanese point of view. ^^' Finally, I hate the fact that they made all these men charming and "Latin-lovers"-like, it's too forced imho (this last critique isn't related to me being Italian, I wouldn't like ANY anime that "forces the hand" so much without even a bit of irony). So, even if I only watched the first episode and I could be wrong (not about the Italian language/cultural bits of it though), I think that Ristorante Paradiso only seems a "mature" anime, but actually is not. Too bad... well, at least I've my Fuyumi Soryo's Taiyo no Ijiwaru manga to read, and it IS a great story placed in a realistic Italy (even if in the past)! I hope they'll make an anime of it. |
