Well, I am a huge Shinkai fangirl, and this latest from him I couldn't help but compare to his earlier works. The artistry was phenominal, truely backgrounds and details and rich vibrant colors are what he does best and this doesn't disappoint in that respect.
I was a bit disappointed in both the Seiyuu and Voice Actors chosen to do this, for some reason, neither seemed to perfectly capture the characters, although it wasn't hideous sounding either. Speaking of sounds, I was expecting much more from the score used, perhaps because I so love the BGM used in The Place Promised in Our Early Days (Shinkai's earlier work) that I was hoping for more here than was delivered. It sounded fine, but nothing stood out to me as particularly moving, and while the last song does seem to perfectly convey the feelings of the show, it does seem a little harsh as its a bit loud, but nothing sounds glaringly wrong either.
The story itself was fine, I was able to connect with nearly every characters feelings well, but I personally would have liked more of one characters feeling though all three shorts. It was disappointing to not hear more of Takaki's feeling in the second short, although I admit, this short moved me the most.
Over-all, while this will not replace Place Promised as my favorite, it was a very solid show, which I can easily see myself re-watching many times and growing more fond of with each viewing. |

A wonderful romance, the opening had one of my favorite songs that perfectly captured the mood of the show and the characters are interesting to watch. The main characters were my favorite, however the others add something different as well. Love under difficult situations are fun to watch unfold. |

This second season set two years after the first however didn't fare as well. The blushes between the young lovers which are so appealing in the first season are just annoying here...seriously, if you have been with someone two years, you are past the blushing when you kiss stage. Still nice to see the characters more, however doesn't live up to it's predecessor. |

I wish I could rate this higher...as it is it may be rated to high. This show is a complete mess. I thought "oohhh, looks pretty" and indeed, it does have many elements I like in anime...pretty animation, winged boys, bishis and some BL, yet throwing a bunch of favorite foods together and calling it dinner will make you sick when you are eating hot fudge covered chicken and rice. Apparently based of a BL game, which may or may not suck, I don't know, the premise is muddled at best here in the anime. Brothers from another world who are royalty and have wings unbeknownst to them, separated as children and reunited at school years later...with enemies out to get them...who knows, I could make stuff up and you would never know, my plot description there is more coherent than what I saw. If you simply don't care one wit about any sort of plot, it's watchable for the character designs and pretty art, but...that's it folks. Nothing I can recomend here. |

Anytime an anime can suck you in to caring about the characters, that's a good thing, and this anime excels in that. There are many good things here, it's complex yet subtle relationships, character design and plot. It's hard to not instantly love the Angelic Layer game and it's "angels" or dolls, whom a user can create themselves for a wonderful diversity of designs or styles, all showing some of Clamps best designs (there is a very high cuteness factor at work here.) The plot is a wonderfully well thought out with the ending being one of the more satisfying in how it wraps everything together. It's hard to not draw comparisons to Clamps best work, in my opinion, CardCaptor Sakura. Humor, drama, human emotion and a plucky heroine all make this an anime you should definately check out. |

I didn't expect to like this so much actually, the first Appleseed (Both other previous Appleseed actually) were underwealming and didn't leave me expecting much here, but I was pleasantly surprised. The art is excellent but more than that, the story is solid. Yeah, it is still heavily action oriented, and those scenes are fun to see, but beyond that, the background and character interactions are enough to flesh everyone out, give them some interest and make this a more solid story than it could have otherwise been. This gets slightly higher marks from me due to the pretty art, be it CGI or hand drawn, pretty art always interests me. Not boring and the one Appleseed I would recomend if you only wanted to see one...which you only want to see one, trust me. |

This is one of those shows that I like more every time I see it. School girl adventures without being a harem comedy, yet funny in simple little everyday ways. Each character is well defined and both normal and quirky in her own way, and you can't help but like to watch them. |

Such a wonderfully powerful film emotionally, it's impossible to deny the effect it will have on you long after you are done watching. Told from the perspective of those who were struggling along to begin with and then went thru the terrors of the Hiroshima bomb, this film hides no horrrors, but places them firmly in the viewers eye. Not for the very squeamish perhaps, but a film that I think should be viewed (if not enjoyed) by all. |

Starts very violently and bloody with characters being introduced as fast as possible, yet winnowing out the characters fast as well so we can eventually get to know several and develop relationships with them. The series does a very good job of conveying emotions and making you care deeply about what is happening. Satisfying ending. Some of the very prettiest animation I have ever seen... stunning even. |

The ending will leave you wondering what happens next, however, the route to getting there is interesting enough to watch anyway, and didn't lessen my appreciation of this anime. If you want a conclusion you will have to continue the story in manga, which the anime followed pretty closely, but didn't finish. |

I admit to leaning towards liking the art of Masamune Shirow, and the robot in this was no exception. I can't say the plot or animation was stellar, but for being an older anime, it held up well in story. Very different looking from most anime. This movie tells the story of a girl, Amamiku, who has been living under the water, sleeping in stasis for years, waiting for the time she can re-surface when the nuclear fall-out settles. She has been entrusted with seeds, containing the DNA for life and re-growth on the earth. Of course, not everyone wants this to happen, or this would be a very boring movie, so in comes the baddie to try and take her and her companions out before they can save the planet from permenant desolation. The story is a bit muddled for no clear reason, the girl/war part makes sense, but the brain/god thingers trying to stop her don't and they aren't explained well enough to take very seriously in this story. Seriously, they look like a big brain in a bubble (are they talking aloud, or communicating telepathically? The animation is different so it takes a bit to get used to, but what follows is the closest thing to a very good dramatic soap opera I have ever seen. This title is so shojo I find it hard to imagine very many guys would like it however, maybe I am wrong. The characters are all real and fallable and flawed and it unfolds in such a way that it's hard to know where it's going next...or even who the main love interest is. I really enjoyed this. |

One of my favorite anime, this is just a wonderful non-cloying sugar sweet show about good people with good charaters with a good non-annoying plot. Hard to believe it's about collecting cards, yet it can't be compared with Pokemon or YuGiOh. The battles never feel like it's the monster of the week, and if I could ever live in an anime family, I would want to live in Sakura's, as I think Sakura is about the absolutely cutest anime girl EVER. |

Stunning. Beautiful. Imaginative beyond belief and well thought out. This is one that sucked me in fairly fast and kept me watching intently. I felt like I was anxious for more through the whole show which was such an odd feeling and it wasn't because it was frightening or scary, it was just so consuming of my eyes and ears that I felt so very drawn into it. This will clearly be one of my new favorites from Makoto Shinkai who seemed to take some pages from Miyazaki in character design, which only helped his movie and skills when it comes to leaving scenery and drawing people. |

The animation put me off at first, but I was completely "hooked" by the third disk when I had more information of the mysterious people and events to care about what everyone was doing and feeling. From that disk on it got better and better, the pacing was slow but with good reason as events unfolded, and the surprises were truly surprises. Excellent character development, very good series. |

The series title makes you think it will be a classic translation along the lines of the fabulous Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, and you would be wise to listen to me say, there is NO comparrison other than they were adapted (loosely) from well known literature. The characters are one dimensional and don't grow or vary through the series and the plot is...weak. It could have been interesting if done differently and in a much shorter time frame. The animation is terrible and uses way too many stills, pan and scans, and lazy animation. The dialog is cheezy and nothing stays dramatically serious, yet nothing is actually funny either, despite the characters all "bravely foraging on ahead laughing and staying close to each other" which sounds heart-warming, but isn't. The English dub just makes it more unbearable as I think the same VA (or an admirer) was used that does Mr. Crabbs in Sponge Bob to add that piratey character. I say, go watch Gankutsuou, and if you have already seen it, go watch something else and skip this. |

I didn't expect this show to appeal so much to me and was so pleased with the show. The premise of Captain Tylor being "irresponsible" or not is never fully clear until the end, so you are always wondering, is he truly clueless or genius? The characters are all different and easily distinguishable, the plot and writting is fun and entertaining and it would be impossible to not love Tylor. You may not laugh out loud but you will watch with a smile on your face. A wonderful show. |

Surprisingly touching and emotional, this wasn't what I expected from the description. Much better than I thought and I would certainly recomend this, the issues of divorce and growing up are dealt with sensitively and the fantastical elements blend in perfectly so as to enhance the story rather than overwhelm it. |

I debated rating this higher, however, it can't really be in everyone's collections as it's not readily available. A surprisingly twisted and well paced show about adolecent boys and their troubled emotions. That perhaps makes it sound needlessly angsty, when it's really one character's twistedness and wrecked emotions that affect the others around him. Done in all flashback form and narrarated by a main character from the present, the story can focus on drawing you into their lives so that you care about the characters and what they feel and go through. Tastefully and wonderfully done, and the animation is fairly good for being mid 80's when it came out, althought it wouldn't compare well to todays standards, there is nothing that would keep you from enjoying it. |

This was a good show that certainly kept my interest, building the more I saw. The balance of what is going on, and what you know so far in the story, and what will happen next is a fun guessing game up until the end, and you can't help but hope that Key doesn't end in tragedy, that she finds her friends and becomes human. Caring for robot Key isn't hard to do, despite her stiffness, it's easy when looking to her friends examples. Her friends that help her are all well fleshed out and very human in their emotions and it's easy to care about all involved with Key. The animation itself is unremarkable, yet fits the tone of the show well, as does it's music which seems to perfectly compliment the story. |

Wow, this is hard to rate. This has some of the worst animation, and even if it were better, a lot of people wouldn't love this show. If you watch and love the story, eventually you overlook the bad animation. Who will love this show? Those who like bishi's and sap, angst to the Nth degree and easily slashable characters.If you like that, you will love this show. It actually does have a decent plot, poor troubled boys leading troubled lives, forced to be assasins due to various reasons which torment them all in their own way. Evil bishi badies to fight against and lots of action as well. I actually like the show, but couldn't in good conscience recomend it to someone else who didn't like it for the angsty boys. Or slashiness. |

A very slow paced, deep character piece. The forbidden romance pondered by the characters is developed so beautifully and sensitively it's a treat to watch it unfold. I particularly love the way this story is told so you aren't sure how it will end, and yet it never shies away from the difficulties in it. The animation is beautiful, and the background music perfectly frames the scenes, serving to draw one deeper into the story. Highly recomended. |

This show was one my family loved. Sugar and all the fairies are adorable, and more than that, the human characters are equally attractive and easy to watch. It starts very strong really and while is seems to lose a little steam as it goes, it stays focused on the plot, and ends well. Very high cutsie factor at work here, but not so sweet your mouth will water. |

This could have been a good anime. The premise was interesting and everyone loves a good vampire flick, right? This just isn't that good. The annoying pans falling on heads never lets up, and while it's less annoying when the plot is light, when the focus should be on the drama, it utterly kills any story. There are so very many good elements in this anime, yet it may not actually have something for everyone. Episodic, quiet, serene, stunning, immaginative, beautiful, relaxing, endearing, the praise could go on and on. The animation is very pretty, crisp and clear, stunning colours are used in a warm and wonderful way, yet there isn't always something going on. There are times the scenery is still, the camera doesn't move, pans and scans are common, yet it never feels lazy here, instead it adds to the panoramic views, and the quiet gentle feel of this charming show. Each episode takes us into a new story, all wonderfully imagintive and varied where we get to meet new creatures, the Mushi, who are sometimes helpful, sometimes harmful, and sometimes simply just there, changing daily life for inhabitants. Ginko is the Mushi master, who deals with them, looking for solutions for people and Mushi to co-exist in harmony when possible.
The music is all designed to keep you in the perfect frame of mind and compliments the show perfectly, and frankly, this show has some of the best and most wonderful art designs for the box, cover, disks and extras, and it is well worth investing in this series. It would be an easy re-watch for one episode at a time or a marathon, whichever you have time for when in the mood for something to soothe you.
My one complaint about this show is that many of the characters are completely indistinguishable from each other. At first, I had trouble telling if the next episode was the same person as the last episode or a new character, but once I got over that, it was certainly no hinderance to watching and enjoying this show to it's fullest. |

I really liked this show. The plot wasn't resolved, which is annoying, but the characters were all very very cute. I love every thing about this show! I love the characters, the designs, the music, the story, the emotions it makes you feel...everything from deep friendship, love, betrayal, confusion, hope, sadness, the ups and downs of someone who feels life deeply and expresses every emotion to it's limits and sometimes painful conclusions, heedlessly headstrong and willful, and someone who feels deeply but keeps the feelings hidden, thinks internally and moves after contemplation with deliberate purpose. The story is well thought out, almost every single character in fully fleshed out throughout this story and despite getting to know many people you never feel overwhelmed by the cast. Beautiful. |

If you are a fan of musicals and an anime fan, it doesn't get any better than this, a combination of both. The music is snappy, the lyrics (and dialog) are fun, the plot is enough to carry the story, and the variety of characters add points of interest. There are only about 8-10 different music scores used with different lyrics used so if this series were longer it would sound too repetitive, however, since the songs are fun, it's easy to overlook. The sub and dub are very different, but it certainly detracts nothing whichever way you listen to it, and I would recommend either. The disks are full of extras from commentaries, to sing along lyrics, to pop-up notes, that it's packed with many ways to view. I loved this, and it moved into my top 10, although I admit, it isn't for everyone...or perhaps even most. |

One of my top 10 favorites. Female assasins with mysterious pasts set beautiful music and nice animation. Just a nice over-all feel to this show. The fact that you come to care about the characters and what has happened to them and want to find out right along with them makes this so appealing. The pacing is nice as it unfolds towards the climax, and doesn't leave you disappointed. |

I can't believe I almost didn't hear about this! Every Miyazaki fan would love this, this short anime only set to song (music video) is so touching and memorable. The winged girl looks like Nausicaa and is very frail/sick at start and is saved and revived and finally freed at the end, I teared up. The music is touching and the point clear without words. |

Breath-taking animation, stunningly clear and crisp, clean visuals, just a treat for the eyes to behold. The story is touching and I think one that gets better every time it's seen. Beautiful music and a strong sub and an even better dub, with the characters expressing their emotions well, even if the plot seems to lose you at times, the characters never do. It was impossible for me to not be sucked into this world. |

This title put me off for a while, and when I finally did see it, I was won over immediatly. Not a sugary sweet fairy tale, but a slightly off-kilter one that makes it all the more mysterious and wonderful. Set to awesome music (no one can claim classical music is otherwise) the "battles" are decided by ballet which is so much cooler than it sounds. A must see/must own. |

Wow, I wanted to rate this higher, and if I could break up the seasons I may. It started very good, very funny, and the wonderful plot device of changing sexes while not original, was certainly funny. The first few seasons drew me in, and I was enjoying all the exploits of all the characters, of which there are many, all with their own charms. Then, something bad happened...it fell into mediocrity, and sometimes not even rising to that. It started to find a bit of it charm again in season 5 I think it was, but it was not enough to make it really funny again. In the end, I felt cheated...seven long seasons, some specials and no conclusion. It felt like the whole show was simply filler...when it was good, it was good, but when it wasn't... watch the first two seasons and stop, and you'll have seen the very best this show would have to offer... that gets a much better over-all grade, all the way to excellent. |

Will this never end? The downward spiral from season to season in both plot and animation continues, leaving one wonder "what was it about this show that originally drew me to it?" I think the creators forgot as well as this shows continues to plod along while going nowhere but down fast. Will there be more? Will there ever be an end in sight to justify watching up till now? The second season takes what was wonderful...and goes downhill quickly unfortunately. In what is the most disappointing continuation, the animation suffered (it looks like I could have done better) all the characters look different, the voice actors all changed, so I had to start watching subbed, which I woudn't have minded as much had I not started this dubbed. The beautiful music you loved in the first series is all gone and replaced with forgettable stuff that doesn't enhance the show... I woudn't recomend this to most fans, however I stick around to see where it goes...I am expecting to be disappointed...and once again, the series doesn't end... |

Wow, this show is surprising. It starts and looks like a childrens show but quickly turns into something much darker. The way the story unfolds is a bit muddled at times, but the disturbing scenes will make such a strong impression on you that will be what you remember when you are thru. I admit, the dichotomy of the look and feel of this show is appealing to me. |

It's rare for a show to have me in real suspence, however parts of this did just that with the feel of a true race against time and a use of your mental abilities to over come your problems which is somehow more appealing than brute strength. The perfect blend of imagination and art, a wonderful story with just the right amount of fascination (did they just turn into pigs?!) and magic, where everything is slightly familiar, and slightly off-kilter. There isn't a plot to get hung up on, it's very much a slice of life show, and nothing else. This title is in my top ten as it feels easy breezy to watch whenever, and especially when I want to smile and forget about life for awhile, this title makes me smile. The contests between Ran and Mami, the "don't die Detective Kotobuki!" and Yuya "second place" all never fail to make me laugh. There isn't a huge plot you have to force yourself to concentrate on, all the characters are very likable, the animation is lovely, and the dub rocks. I was sorry the second season didn't get the dub treatment as well, however it doesn't hamper my enjoyment of the show one bit. A good show when you need a lift. |

The animation wasn't bad since by the time I saw this it was 15 years old. A sweet and touchingly warm romance. A is in love with B who is in love with C who is in love with D. I was surprised I was able to be drawn into the story and characters and grew to care so much about them in this short 6 episode OVA. Much better than I anticipated it being. |

This was a hard one for me to rate. It was wonderful to watch, I loved the details in the art, it was well written and acted (I watched subbed, I didn't like the dub, which had some VA changes in the last disk to my understanding as well, so I would recomend this subbed) and I would recomend anyone to see it. It was gripping, very easy to get sucked into the lives of the characters and really care about what is going on, so in that respect, it was a winner. The end however...when I finished the last disk, I fully expected there to be more, and alas...there wasn't. There should have been. There was more story to tell, and it's sad it never got told. This is one I will really hope more gets done with somme day, and if that ever happens, this may get moved up in rating. |
