Am I the only one that don't trust site reviews when they advertise what they are reviewing?

'My anime list' has it at 61st place in ranting and most of the written reviews are 10 out of 10. So I'll check it out at some point.

The only minus I would give Redline is that were NEVER going to see anything like it in anime ever again.

What's more frightening is how very true that statement likely will be.

One other artistic touch that while looking cool, seemed kind of absurd after a bit of thought. Even when the drivers are racing inside vehicles with sealed cockpits, you'll still see fluids being blown back from their faces as though they were driving an open cockpit machine. The lead character, JP, is especially prone to this just in the opening minutes alone (blood, sweat, tears, all streaking back from his face), which made the racing sequences both guffaw-worthy and entertaining.

His blood is flowing across his face because he used his nitro and the G-forces are increasing and becoming really intense. The blood's momentum is pulling it across his face. Nothing wrong with that.

Have a care, Zac. No-one said "your subjective opinion is wrong". No-one said "how you should feel about this thing". Nor were these positions even implied by anyone. You believe the film is entertaining. Some people agree with you. Some of us think otherwise. You used hyperbole to make your point. I used hyperbole to make mine. That's all. It seems to me that we agree that there's not "only one right way to feel about a film".

Oh Redline, Y U SO GOOD Cool But seriously i love this movie more because it showcases the talents of my favorite animators (Takafumi Hori who did quite a bit of the yellowline race) and reminds me why i love Madhouse so much.

I'm disappointed to hear that the English dub production didn't put as much as care into the script as they could have. I was really looking forward to rewatching this movie with a solid dub, but I guess I will postpone my re-purchase of the movie for a while (I already have the Japanese LE Blu-ray, key animation book, & soundtrack, so I'm far from leeching).

However, nothing's stopping everybody else from owning this fantastic movie at an affordable price since there's nothing wrong about the Japanese track. Shameless plug here, but after watching the movie take a look at this video 0XMURADX0 and I put together that lists who animated what if you're interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgix99pAwRg

Well, Redline kind of completely bombed in Japan, so maybe it'll sell better on the Western side
(hasn't it been out in the UK for a bit longer?)

I thought it was alright, but the random monster fight felt like it didn't have to be there. Redline race also seemed a bit too short compared to the Yellowline. It was fun to watch and the animation was great but I wouldn't call it one of my favorites.

It's truly a treat when Zac reviews a particular film, series, tv show, etc.

This is one of the most well written, thought out and balanced reviews you have written. You are such a talented writer and it's refreshing to read your reviews.

About Redline, I saw this in NYC when Cinema Village was showing the film for a two week run. First off, unfortunately, their website stated that it was going to be in Japanese but it was actually english dubbed. I was disapointed but I still enjoyed this film. This film is excellent in every way and this is what anime is really about, over top the gorgeous animation, excellent character design and art, really great mecha design; in terms of vehciles, military equipment, etc.

For any Anime fan, regardless if you are really into Moe, Shonen, more mature titles like Gantz and/or Berserk, you should pick this up. I mean, Amazon has the Blu-Ray for $20. I know you've spent 20 dollars on much, much worse titles. Let's do our part for the industry and make sure Redline gets the attention of studios, producers, directors, fans, animators and show them that we need more titles like Redline in this medium.

The person he quoted (who wasn't you, despite you seeming to think so) told him flat out that his opinion of Redline as the most entertaining film of the last 10 years is wrong and he should think these other films are more so.

Was the Japanese public just flat out not interested in this movie? Or was there not enough advertising or word-of-mouth for them to take notice?

(and PLEASE don't mention otaku in response to this; it'll only lead to bad things!)

Whoa...A's all over the board?! Looks like I'm gonna have to buy a Blu-Ray burner!

BTW even though the dub might not be good, I remember an ANN Cast where Zac stated that if the viewer wanted the story, switch to subs but for visuals, switch to dub. Please correct me if I'm wrong because either way I'm gonna watch this film more than once.

As for Redline not doing well in Japan, I think this statement from the Roland Kelts article says it all.

A Look at Redline wrote:
...[b]Redline, which was set for a theatrical release in Japan the following April, is one of a growing list of 21st century Japanese-produced anime features...that deliberately target Western audiences. “We really want non-Japanese to see and appreciate this work,” says Takeshi Koike, Redline’s director and chief animator in Tohokushinsha's Tokyo headquarters. “We were thinking of people who don't normally enjoy anime or know anything about it when we came up with the ideas.”

I can't help but appreciate that statement. Even though we non-Japanese anime fans only contribute a small percent to the industry, I still love the fact that this film was (more or less) made for us. I'll gladly purchase this!! ^__^

ANN has had many mediocre to poor reviews and have advertised the same anime. If you know Zac's reviewing style at all, he's not afraid to pan crap when he sees it. Which gives this glowing review even more weight.

Flash-in-the-pan high-octane animation porn at its finest, and little else.
Ending really leaves a few more minutes of resolution to be desired, but the film's good at what it does otherwise.
