I'm thinking the disconnect is probably that you want the worldbuilding laid out for you, but the basis of visual media is show, don't tell, and Redline does a solid job of it IMO.

I watched this (through illegal means) late last year, adored it, and instantly decided I needed to own it. The thing was, I couldn't decide whether to go DVD or Blu-Ray. In the end I knew this had to be experienced in the latter format. The thing is, I don't have a means of playing it right now.  But it's my first Blu-Ray. Baby steps, right? Anyway, this remark here is a giant incentive to find a player and quick:

I agree on that, except I never said or implied anything you've said. 1. Did you tell everyone you showed the film to that it is one of the best anime in the past 10 years, before you show it to them? (and would they be able to discern your claims with any crediblity?) I mean this is what is being touted by the review here. I think that's some really bold claim, to start. Again, my biggest complaint is not the film wasn't great, it just isn't as good as many people make it out to be. 2. I agree that nobody should pigeonhole it to some select subset of people finding it interesting just because they don't like it. I pigeonholed it because of its nature as a very peculiar sort of animation and its reception in Japan, plus by the various issues in the movie (the narrative is the biggest one). I mean it isn't I didn't like it, I liked it enough to watch it three times. I don't think it has anything to do with show or don't tell. It's more like, for example, how some people think K-ON is just about cake and tea, when it is probably just as divisive as an example of show, don't tell as Redline. |

I finally got around to watching this, and I have to say this movie deserves the rating Zac gave it and all the hype it's getting.
I am someone who prefers substance over style any day, and from the negative comments I read I wasn't expecting there to be any story at all. People made it sound like the whole movie was just one big race, with some oddly placed flash backs in the middle, but it's not like that at all. I was presently surprise to find that there was a story and some character development in the movie. Yeah this is a movie people that amount of back story and character development is normal for movies, yes there are movies that have more, but redline is about a big race how much back story do you really need? It you want a fun entertaining movie, with amazing animation then Redline is for you; If you want a deep touching drama, then watch something else. |

Trust me, spend the $60 and begin your journey down the medium, which is Blu Ray and experience Anime in HD. You already have one of the best HD titles for Anime, Redline, in your posession and it's just a crime to own the Blu-Ray and not have a means to view it! Not only Redline, but many of the newer titles which were originally broadcasted in HD, will look nothing short of amazing. |

Did anyone else find the opening race more thrilling than the Redline itself? Maybe it's first impressions (I've just finished watching the movie), but as a long-time F1 fan I thought that the first race - those seven minutes of Zac's review - were far superior to the climax. Where the start seemed more about racing, the end kept throwing in ever more obstacles which I felt detracted from the race itself. As someone noted above, the race grinds to an utter halt halfway through.
I don't know. It's almost as if the creators didn't trust the race to be exiting enough on its own terms. I know I kept wishing all the military and bio-weapons and hypercanons and whatevers would just get out of the way and let the racers race, damn it... |

This movie lived up to my expectations. I really hope Takeshi Koike and Katsuhito Ishii revisit this universe in future projects (please make a follow-up to Trava Fist Planet!). I'm not expecting it to be nearly as gorgeously animated as this film was, but it would be a joy to see.
Bottom line: regardless of which language you watch this in (the English dub honestly didn't bother me), you should definitely watch this movie. P.S. What was the estimated budget for this film? |

Steamboy was in the works for 10 years and is similarly opulent in its animation. The budget was $22 million. Ghost in the Shell: Innocence cost about $20 million. The average Ghibli movie is about $25 million [with Ponyo topping out at $34 million]. I'd expect Redline to somewhere around those numbers, maybe a little bit less but probably not more. |

Well to be fair ANN bashed B Gata H Kei/fanservice anime in general and still advertised that... though in general you shouldn't really use reviews as any factual, objective decision or statement. Especially when you know certain reviewers/sites/whatever have clear likes and dislikes. I mean, Redline is pretty much the exact opposite of what ANN's staff hates, so it getting a high score was pretty predictable (and why it gets a much lower score on other anime websites) As for the movie itself... eh... was okay. Best movie? Can't really agree with that.. I found Summer Wars, Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, and the annual Prince of Tennis, Precure, Naruto, and Pocket Monsters movie more enjoyable. Then again, they were all more coherent and structured and weren't just 'high octane animation porn' as someone so tastefully put it. |
