OMG ... I had completely forgotten about Hyouka getting a release!! Really hope Madman in AU/NZ pull their finger out and get it into our market, AND on BD. They have skipped the BD and done DVD only releases on a few shows.

Edit: I did preorder it on Amazon, but it hasn't shipped yet, so I'm gonna assume it's really not going to ship until the 18. |

I'm glad NIS America is offering a standard edition BD for Card Captor Sakura...it'll probably be the one I pick up when I get around to that show if I really like it.
If I ever get around to that show.  ("CatSword, stop wasting your time on message boards and get to the classics!")

Same. That is a damn fine series. Another thing that made my night...
Hopefully this sells well enough to warrant releasing it in print. I fell hard for the series when it was first being released and would love to collect the whole thing for my shelves. |

I'm not sure there actually is a "standard Blu-Ray" for Cardcaptor Sakura, let alone one at $149.99. A search at both Amazon and NIS America's site turned up nothing. I could only find the previous blu-ray premium edition. In any case, you'd think that that a "standard" blu-ray release (without all the extras) would cost much less than that...

I think Dark Horse releases their books through Diamonds direct to comic book stores distributor a couple weeks before big bookstores and online retailers.
I really liked Alive, too, and have been hoping for a print release as well. I read most of the series through the library, and libraries are more likely to get print versions of newer manga than digital ones. |

If the series was split up into five 14-episode releases, each of them would most likely have a $40-50 MSRP these days. Of course, that's newer shows, and a lot of older shows go for much cheaper than that... but then again, those are franchises that had much more cachet back in the 90s and early 00s than Cardcaptor Sakura, which did surprisingly badly on TV in the US (I also remember that it was heavily edited to remove all the episodes that didn't heavily feature Syaoran, because "boys wouldn't want to watch an action show starring a girl"). It'd probably be a lot harder to sell enough copies of the show to justify a bargain-bin release... people are either going to buy Cardcaptor Sakura or they aren't. |

I snagged Hyouka and The Boy And The Beast (Hosoda Collection), oddly enough, both Funimation releases this week!
I just finished my watch-through of Hyouka's 12 episodes included in this set, and I've got to say, I was pretty impressive with the dub! I watched the show a few years ago in sub, and it was great - got a 4.5/5.0 from me, with a particularly great voice cast to match the beautiful animation. However, the dub cast seems to have stepped up to the plate, and under the ADR direction of the ever-talented Mike McFarland, they all put in some great performances and voice work. I think this show, not being a Simuldub, really allowed them to put in the work and do it right, take their time and get the best out of each line and character they could. Adam Gibbs' third outing as a KyoAni character (previously Hiroomi Nase in Beyond The Boundary, and Kanie Seiya in Amagi Brilliant Park) proves to be a good one, as he channels the personality of Houtarou Oreki very well. The girls' voices are pretty good equivalents for being English/American voice actors, as they won't ever sound as high-pitched or shrill as the original Japanese seiyuu, but even with that in mind, they do a great job filling the roles of the characters and portraying their personalities very well. And Dallas Reid as Satoshi is a stand-out for me, as he provides a very exciting, lively and expressive performance throughout the 12 episodes I watched. Without doing a lot of A-B work, the script sticks pretty true to the original, with a few adjustments here and there for lip-flap and pacing. I just watched a clip from the 11.5 pool-OVA, in both English and in Japanese, and it's interesting to hear those scenes back and forth. The instance where Chitanda splashes water at Oreki, she says "I'm Sorry, I'm Sorry!" in Japanese, but in the English Dub, it's done as "I'm Sorry! They made me!" which works well, showing the kind of innocent regret Chitanda has for being made to do that to him, rather than just apologizing. I know it's one small instance, but I think I liked the adaption there more, and I'm sure there are more bits like that throughout, but I'm too busy to A-B the whole 12 episodes to pick it apart for differences. Either way, it's a good dub, and if you've wanted to watch it but haven't yet, and were waiting for the dub, I can say that it's definitely on-par with the original Japanese audio. As a KyoAni fan, it's nice to see one of their shows get a great dub nowadays. Beyond The Boundary is OK, and Free! was serviceable, but it seemed like a lot KyoAni shows don't get the love and attention they deserve over here in the states, at least, not since the Bandai era (Haruhi, Lucky Star, K-On!). Maidragon's dub was pretty good, and I have high hopes for the Myriad Colors dub whenever CR/Funi get around to that. I haven't seen the Chu2 dub yet, but I'm not holding my breath (because Jun Fukuyama was amazing in the Japanese audio). -Marc. |

^Thank you for the thoughtful dub review. I've been thinking about checking out Hyouka. There's been so much hype around it over the years, but it's only been available legally recently. It's good to know it has a good dub! And I agree, KyoAni shows are gorgeous but rarely get dubs to match.

I just got Hyouka and pre-ordered the secund set last night, which comes out in September.
I'm holding off watching it till I get the complete set. Man, I love this show. It's my favorite. I'm so happy they licensed it. This is the only show I watched and thought that I'd be happy pay for, but for a long time we couldn't. |
