So this is the series I heard is one of Bee Train's "worst" series, right (of course this based on what some people said in some fansub forums)? I'm almost tempted to rent it just to see how lackluster it is. Though the negative reactions I heard about the ending were quite strong.

I would bet that the reason some were upset with the ending is because in the late stages of the series all this stuff about what's going on outside of the heroine's struggles which threatens Mars is dropped in and then absolutely nothing is ultimately done with it in the end. Otherwise the series ends about exactly like you'd expect it would.
I wasn't happy with the way it ended, either, but it was the ending I expected so I didn't quibble about it. |

I love Madlax's ending, but that's just me. I'm planning on buying this for Christmas (3 dvds for $25!?* Hell yes!) I haven't seen any of this show but I had loved Beetrains other shows such as .hack, Noir, and Madlax, so I'm assuming I will love this one as well, and if not, oh well I'll just sell it

I felt that the ending of Avenger was a bit dissapointing, but not too bad. Also, I thought Madlax had a pretty good ending.
$25-$30 for an entire 13 episode series is a great deal, so if you're interested in the series, there's really no reason not to pick it up. |

I watched this series fansubbed awhile last year and I was like,
"It's nice and all but...why are they doing all this again?" 
I mean the series does have a good deal of plot holes in it. Yes the plot is simple but there was a good deal missing. It's like being given a puzzle that someone has had for years. You finally sit down work on it and when you come close to finishing you always find yourself short one piece. Even though the box looks like it was never opened. "But I made sure I put the pieces back carefully years ago." 
Well, that's what 'Avenger' feels like. But mind you I kind of enjoyed this film. I'm a simple person that doesn't demand a lot out of my anime. I watch just about anything. After watching 'Noir' and 'Madlax', I sort of gained not just an attachment to 'Bee Train', but an appreciation. I read a review in a past issue of 'Newtype USA' profiling the studio 'Bee Train'. They are they type of animators that are interested in creating new features and putting them out. Even if in the end the project ends up being a failure. It's about having a love for doing the project and giving your all. They are not trying to compete on that level which is 'Gonzo' or 'Production I.G'. But yet they've been getting good business. 
Lets not forget having'Yuki Kajiura' and 'Ali Project' at their side and they produce a good soundtrack. Actually, it was 'Noir' that turned me on to the two composers. And I've purchased almost anime soundtrack they've composed for. So I have a good deal of faith in 'Bee Train's works. They sort of strike a chord with me. Hell, they got me into the 'femme Fatale' type shows. 
Question: Would I buy 'Avenger' even though it "lacks" based on what I know about it? 
Answer: For $20-$30, and you get all 13 episodes? Hell yeah!
Like I said I'm not picky. I'll be picking up this little puppy soon. Gotta get 'Noir' and 'Madlax' too. Actually, in another light this show reminded me of my days playing 'Final Fantasy' 
Why is there always trouble on 'Mars? 'Armitage III', 'Avenger', hmmm...must be a connection.

It's not just, anime, it's a pretty typical science fiction trope. Think Babylon 5 or Total Recall. It's more exotic than the Moon but still close enough to imagine colonized. And colonies frequently have problems... |

Yeah I agree with you. Ever sense I saw .hack I feel in love with Beetrain. Noir, Madlax, .hack, etc alot of their recent animes aren't for people who want action, hack-in-slash, comdey and stuff, it's for those people who want to solve a mystery (no, I'm not comparing this to Detective Conan *shiver* That's not even in the same leage) It gives you characters and a story and YOUR the one that has to put the pieces together before the series ends. I love Beetrain for that reason. .hack got me to LOVE Yuki Kajirua See-Saw, Ali Project, Fiction Junction (insert all the different names they use here) So that's another reason that to me Beetrain will always be my fav studio. I've already requested it on my Xmas list from my parents and add it to one of my fav animes of all time list. |

So true, but will we ever get there? We sent a probe up. I forgot about 'Total Recall'. Actually, here's something I had little problem with. If anyone has had the chance to read the November issue of 'Newtype USA', they run a section about 'Avenger'. Mostly character designs but some of the comments by 'Mashimo' contain some spoilers. I was like "damn" I guess it really doesn't make much of a diffence now since they are giving you the whole package. Didn't bother me as much since I've seen it but what about those who haven't? But maybe they might not be too much like "spoilers". But they did give away enough of the basic plotline. It's funny, that just before this set was due I had just went out and bought the single for 'Grand Guignol' (whatever that means). Because it contains both the "TV size" and extended versions for 'Grand Guignol' and 'Mirai no Eve'. Plus, the karaoke versions. The original soundtrack doesn't carry the TV sized versions of those songs, only the extended versions. Which I found odd. Because most soundtracks carry the TV size with the exception of some. The extended versions almost always ends up being on the vocalist's album. Which you end up having to purchase separately. 'Kiddy Grade' was the one soundtrack that spanned 3 CDs due to having both the TV size and extended size versions of the song. Some drama and vocal songs, as well as the regular series soundtrack. And you can't just buy one you have to buy all 3. I've been having a ball blasting 'Ali Project' singing 'Grand Guignol' and 'Mirai no Eve' during the weekends. So now I have to get the series so I can watch it again.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha! I like that line the "straightdope". Oh man, now that's some pretty interesting stuff. Gotta leave it to 'Ali Project' to pick a title that relates to something odd. Now I wonder where it fits in significance to the show. Maybe I better go check out the lyrics and see what the translation says. Thanks on that note Nobuyuki! See folks, "learning is fundamental!"

Y'know I gave it more thought about the reference to 'Grand Guignol' and how it relates to 'Avenger' and now it makes sense. Nothing like folks watching the "macabre" for pure entertainment.

I know this is late but chances are someone will read it anyway.
I finally purchased the 'Avenger Collection' tin. I have to say while it looks nice on the outside, it hides an ugly truth on the inside. I have to admit at times many of these companies do a fairly decent job coming up with different ways to make a nice "piece" of storage for multiple DVDs. 'Geneon's tin for the 'Appleseed: The Movie' Special ED, was very nice in it's execution however I was not too pleased with the way the CDs were situated in the case. This proves the same with the 'Avenger' tin. The case it just that a tin box. On the underside of the lid is where the first disc is situated on it's spindle which is affixed to the tin's surface. Mind you, it doesn't stick well. The other two discs are placed on adjacent sprockets. One atop the other. This is very similar to the 'Appleseed' movie tin. Both discs were covered with a foam cushion to keep them in place and protect the first. Also, the set includes a film cell. Kind of like from a mm film real. Nice touch. That was until I examined mine more closely. The first disc had fallen off it's spindle. The holder had fallen off the underside it was supposed to be stuck too. So that left scuffs on the "reading" area. Even the last 2 discs didn't escape problems. Disc 3 had hairline scratches and disc 2 suffered a large scratch from being placed on it's spindle. Chances are this was possibly made from the machine putting the discs in the case. I had to pack up my set and send it back to the retailer for an exchange. Though I only paid $20 I still expected it to be in good condition. I was able to get a replacement but I made sure I checked it over. This time it was better. The amount of damage was roughly 3%. It just goes to show you the difference it can make when buying special sets. This is one reason why buying them in their cases works out better. I purchased the first file to 'Kiddy Grade' as well. The 2 disc case they used was the kind where you put a disc on each side. When I exchanged the DVD I got one that uses a 2-tray format. But you really have to treat them case by case. At the same time they need to stop making and using these cheap cases. Companies need to really pay attention to how they come up with "spiffy" was to make their collections shine. Because sometimes it's not all "glitter and gold". |
