I caught a few minutes of this on WB the other day. It looked atrocious.

when marketing ploys go nasty...

what is with this trend of "hip"-y ness?
i'm not sure it kids fall for it... (if they do, it scares away everyone outside the target demographic..)

Meh. I like it.

Maybe it's because Joe's such an airhead... Or that damn theme song is so good... Either way, it makes me watch it week after week somehow, so obviously it's doing something right.

It's a kids' show. The kind of kids' show that, y'know, KNOWS its a kids' show and doesn't really make any big strides to rise above that. Its a fun thing to watch if you have a DVR and a half-hour to kill.

Considering that Viewtiful Joe is placed within the same programming block as Loonatics Unleashed, I'd say it looks pretty rosy in comparison.

The anime improves later on as the series continues. (Though this is around Gedow arc, which really starts on episode 27.) My main issue with the dub is the fact that it seems to switch the original music around at times. (Still the original bgm, just at different places) Sometimes the script annoyys me a bit.

If anyone wants to see what was edited, click here. Yes, it's outdated, I need to update it, but it does give you an idea what's been edited.

I'm probably the one person in the world that enjoyed the Viewtiful Joe anime series, along with the english dub of it.

It's perfectly understandable if you dislike the show or it's dub for that matter, but Joe is precisely what he should be like...dumb and "gnarly", tubular, etc. By the way, if you think those voices suck, you need to play Viewtiful Joe's Red Hot Rumble. After that, you'll be dying to hear Gran Bruce's wonky Australian accent. Still, I'm surprised you disliked the program so much. It's just rather typical fun Saturday morning stupidity.

I saw a the first two episodes of sub and it seemed a little more calmed down than the dub.

I was slightly annoyed by the fact that the Saturday run started on Episode 5 instead of the beginning (which I saw) which would let everyone know the backstory, even those who haven't played the game.

I think Geneon got caught between a rock and a hard place. Viewtiful Joe is what it is. It's supposed to be almost parodic in a way, and so they have to go over-the-top and whatnot.

Oh, and Gatsu FTW, because he's EXTREEEEEEEME!

I haven't seen the original, but I too kinda like this show based off of the english dub. I find it hella better than Dub Piece (or any other 4kids dubs for that matter).

Hell, I think the opening song alone makes it the best anime you can watch Saturday mornings!

(The only thing I really can't stand is Charles III raspy-french accent)

It's SIGNIFICANTLY better than "Dub Piece".

Anyway, I read the review and...

(please forgive the ALL CAPS...)

THIS IS WHY I DON'T READ ANN's REVIEWS!

(again, I apologize)

Okay, so it doesn't use the video game voices, they try too hard to make Joe hip, the dub itself ignores the video games in certain places (Machine/Robo Six, instead of Six Machine/Majin), the DVD is dub-only and while the original BGM is retained, it's "manipulated" in places (also, we hear "Brighter Side, but we see an American created opening), something I believe may have been the result of a petty attempt at a compromise between the Geneon and the WB (the latter of which may or may not have ordered that the DVD's be dub only)

Okay, fine. However, this is a prime example of a BIASED and unfair review. This review is CLEARLY biased against the fact that it's dub-only (and yes, it compares the dub to something 4Kids would do). Yes Zac, I'm talking to you. Clearly you dislike DVD's that are dub-only even if they are significantly better then the stuff 4Kids puts out. The dub really isn't that bad (though I would have liked to see the subtitled version also included). I'm kind of bummed that we aren't hearing Dee Bradley Baker (my personal preference) as Joe, but Jason Palmer does capture the essence of who Joe is, even if, again, the dub tries too hard to make him sound hip ("Dude", Joe doesn't, "like", talk that way in the video games). For these reasons among others, why did you even bother writing a review of this DVD?

Again, this is exactly the reason why I don't read ANN's reviews. Slightly off topic, but you can see why I posted in the Talkback thread about the Macross review without reading it.

Back on topic, I do have one question (please answer, this is important). Does this DVD have the actual first three episodes? The dub refers to them as:

1. "Just a Dude Named Joe"
2. "What's-His-Name to the Rescue"
3. "Dude, Did You Just Say 'Viewtiful?'"

I ask because the TV broadcast started with episode 5 ("Howdy, Partner"). In any case, I was right. I figured that with a running time of 65 minutes, it would have three episodes. Finally, assuming that these are the included episodes, what concerns me more is: will the second DVD have the fourth episode in addition to the 5th and 6th ones? This, BTW, is a rhetorical question, as we'll find out in due time.

I can answer this. Geneon's dvds are in order of how they originally aired in Japan. So yes, the first three episodes are included.

While I'm sure I'm stepping into something I shouldn't, I have to say this: WTF?! Now, I don't know Mr. Bertschy personally, I can assure you he's not a 14-year-old Narutard. The lack of sub is a detractor because 90% of all the other anime in the US offers multiple languages. It got a bad grade because of poor performance and poor execution. Jason Palmer and Kate Levine kinda got on my nerves after awhile. Hell, the show itself is maybe a C at best, no matter what language it is.

It is nice to see Geneon on daytime television, but there has to be something better.

Joe's voice is absolutely godawful, it's almost painful to listen to. only good thing is they kept "Henshin A No Go Baby".
seriously, why couldn't they obtain the voice actors from the game? i mean they kept the voice of the shark.

Because dubbing studios don't have unlimited funds.
