Interesting, I've seen this in the store a number of times, since it's so close to Love Hina, but never really given it a second glance. Perhaps I should, even though I'm long past the age where honesty actually works when starting relationships Anime cry

I'm so glad this got a good review! It's one of my favorite manga, but it's extremely underrated. My favorite character is definately Hoshino, though I love Yoko as well. It's very stange at times, but none the less very romantic and sweet.

Oh, it's quite the opposite of Love Hina in a lot of things, which always amuse me. And it's a fun, nice read without too much of a bother.

The humor can be repetitive, though. Hoshino does act like an idiot, but, refreshingly, not a Keitaro-ish idiot. Then again, I must admit that them being central to everyone in the manga (they're always being watched and cheered on -.-") is actually fun despite repeating the gag in just about every chapter.

And the two side-kicks are just as refreshingly low-key funny, a nice break from all the Cute Animals (tm) and Overactive Best Friends (tm) that dominate most romances.

I couldn't agree more with this review, especially this quote in particular....

What is refreshing about Love Roma is that, like its leads, it's honest. This is one love-comedy that shuns all of the strident, drama-enhancing trappings of the genre. There are no giant fights, no weepy declarations of undying devotion, no suicide attempts, no last minute rescues from lecherous punks (or old men), and no forces hell-bent on separating the lovers. Love Roma is simple. It is the story of Hoshino and Negishi's relationship, their fumbling first attempt at love. There is no need for outlandish plot developments, the simple travails of everyday living are drama enough.

On a similar note, what I loved most about the book is that unlike most romantic comedies, which are all about the struggle to get the two leads together, what Love Roma does is slap the two leads together then follow them from there. It's not about the rocky road to the relationship, it's about the relationship itself, and that's a very refreshing spin on a genre which, as much as I enjoy it, can get pretty tired at times.
