Nevermind the fact that it's what Bleach's manga-ka Tite Kubo uses when he decides to write the word "shinigami" in English for whatever reason. |

I don't recall Kubo himself using the term ever. I know the first soundtrack used the term. But I think they meant Soul Reaper as the name of the swords. And from what (admittiadly very little) I understand that's a fairly accurate translation of "zampakto" (spelling on that has to be butchered.) considering most fans went with Soul Slayer.
And that there is where my major contention with the term comes from. It seems to be meant as the name for the swords, but is given to the people. Now a term which I think should be translated can't be because that term is already used, and we have an incorrect translation used for another term. Really, "Death God" or "Death Spirit" if you want to be touchy gets the point across perfectly well. |

The recent Bleach artbook "All Color But the Black" also used Soul Reaper when Ichigo's occupation is listed.

I've never seen the Japanese language version. Perhaps I will someday. In regards to the critique of Rukia's English voice, it seems only natural to me that her voice stay the same because she is new at being "human". As a soul reaper, she showed no emotion, so naturally she would be inexperienced at speaking differently. That's my take, at least.
However, did you not notice in the scene of Rukia's first day at class? After taking Ichigo by surprise, she spoke the phrases including the words, "jeepers" and "you big brute" in a slightly elevated and playfull tone. It made me laugh pretty hard!

Did anyone else notice a sound quality problem with this dvd? I'm on my third copy of it from Amazon and can't get one that sounds "right". The English track is ok, but the Japanese track has some serious muting issues.

Maybe it's fluke? ... Yeah, I'm a little concerned given that Viz has Death Note, so... But yeah... maybe it's a fluke? |

Well, I'm going to return it again and see if I get a better copy.
But the sound isn't acceptable so far in any player I have access to in the Japanese track. I'm going to try it in one more player today, but I don't imagine it will be any different. |

I watched the first volume of this series right after watching the first volume of Fate/Stay Night and Shana volume 2. I will admit that this might have helped make this series feel formulatic to me. indeed there is no booklet, but there is a paper insert which seems rather useless. The little latches on the case seem to throw me off, but that's okay since I throw away my cases.
The most annoying thing about this release is that all of the scriptwriters, animation directors, etc. are listed at the end of each episode! I don't mind if the ending credits are not translated. It's really nice when an alternate angle is used to display both English and Japanese credits as Funimation does. It's nice when the individual credits are untranslated, and a complete list of translated credits are used at the end of the DVD like some Geneon and Bandai titles. I love how ADV did Macross with the untranslated credits followed by the translated credits for each episode. What Viz did here is the only translation technique that really annoys me since I can't tell who worked on which episode! Why did they do this? |

It's a shounen series, they always have some kind of formula. I'm not bothered by it, though. Shounen is my favorite genre. |

Soul Reaper is the official term. The Japanese DVDs used it and it's the most accepted. Zanpakutou translates to Soul Slayer if memory serves.
Hehe... I love "Number One". It's so eighties. I always get pumped when I hear it though. The full vocal piece is better though (read: more corny). And Life is Like a Boat isn't really country is it? I just heard it as a pop ballad piece. It's also really easy to sing to, which is always cool.
Why does that annoy you? The credits were there to let you know who did what. It was on TV anyways, so having them at the end of the DVD would be a disservice to the production staff in the first place, since they derserve credit for their work. |

I really like Bleach. I love how it's so colorful, energetic, and fun. I like the dub, and to be honest, I liked how Michelle Ruff played Rukia as a schoolgirl. You have to notice the dialougue I think, to make it sound funny. Rukia may not of sounded too different but she said things like "Jeepers!" in a lighter tone that makes you laugh.
I don't like Shonen much anymore(except for some standouts), but Bleach is a shonen that keeps me interested. |

I've been watching the Japanese version.
I loved Ichigo's dub voice. Bosch did a gret job with that. I also like Ruika. But...I disliked Renji who i heard for the frist time Saturday. I missed his bantering with ichigo so I don't know how they sound together...as of now i'm leaning towards the japanese version. we'll see. |

Yeah, I just cringed when I heard Renji's voice. I think Byakuya's voice is spot on though, which I'm thankful for. Edit: there were a few lines that gave me hope for Renji. He sounded like a Dragon Ball Z character most of the time, which is what really got under my skin. And he seemed to put emPHAsis on wierd sylLAbles. If he learns to tone it down a bit, I think he could work out. |

About time ANN reviewed this. Interesting review, but I have to disagree about the art and animation; Its style looks unlike anything I've seen, and it's smooth throughout. Right up there with the (mostly) terrific music.
I really loved these episodes, but to be honest, I just can't see myself plopping down 30 big ones (Canadian) just for four episodes I've seen already. Given Bleach's popularity, there is no reason to price it so high. |

I tried asking this in the dub thread, but nobodied replied...
Did Viz fix the transfer error that was in the first (I believe) episode? In the R2 DVD, there was one shot where the layers were switched so that the Hollow was overlapping Ichigo. |
