Wow, I didn't know Ouran Host Club was THAT big. To be in the top 5 with those shonen juggernauts sure says something.

Hooray for Blue Dragon, Hooray for Eye-shield. Maybe there is some hope for Blue Dragon after all Wink.

I figured that it was pretty massive considering how much you keep hearing about this titles over and over in just about every message board. I am bit shocked on Blue Dragon I thought that it wasn't as well received as some thought it would be.

Truthfully I don't think it IS that big. A spot in the top five during your debut week does speak well for your manga, but it doesn't make it a blockbuster. It's if you can hold on to a spot in the top ten or consistently get one that matters. I mean there are a ton of cds that make the top five their first week of release on Billboard's top 100, but then they just fall off the face of the earth. Also, Naruto and Bleach are not near as big over there as they are over here amongst fans.

I wonder why ANN just chose to post these rankings this week? It would be interesting to see them every week...

Bleach above Naruto, whowuddathunkit?

And Vampire Night is up there, too - impressive. I just got the first volume but I haven't read it yet. I knew Ouran was huge, but this is a surprise.

yeah, same here. i wasn't expecting that. and on that note, not that i don't think it's a good series, but i was surprised to see Vampire Knight rank in the top 10. Wink

The Ouran supporters on this forum haven't been leaking hot air for nearly a year now during the anime's heyday. Anime smile

Ouran is a large, popular title with great appeal; it's not surprising to hear the manga is doing well, since that was apparent years ago and could be a factor in why the anime hasn't been licensed yet.

...

HOWEVER,

>>6 - One Piece Yellow Grand Elements - Eiichiro Oda - Shueisha - Y700

Please take little mind of my patriotism, but OP Yellow coming in sixth after Naruto or Bleach is a disaster. The data books might not be as popular as the manga volumes but MAN, I would never have imaged that either Bleach or Naruto to have the clout to beat out any OP property and here we see a hot property with tons of promotion lagging behind.

I know the manga volumes weren't as high as last year, but man - is the OP franchise starting to waver? it's far from dying, yes, but in each sales or ratings report I see OP is but a shade of its previous self! Neutral

I really disagree with this. A data book doesn't have near the clout of a normal tankouban. Most books like this don't even make the top ten. That's something only for the dedicated fans. The day that Naruto or Bleach beats out a normal OP tankouban new release, it will have something to worry about. As it is now, the gap in popularity between the two and OP is still enormous.

I'm surprised to see To-Love-Ru doing so well. I keep hearing that it doesn't rank that high in Weekly Shounen Jump so I didn't expect to see it in the top 10 at all. I hope this means it'll be able to stick around for another year as I rather like it despite it mainly being a fanservice series.

So uh... why'd they decide to post them this week, all of a sudden? To tell us that Naruto and Bleach debut first and second? Hardly a shocker to anyone, and it's not like just about the same thing happens every single week?

And for the record, just because something's hitting the top ten in a particular week doesn't really mean it's a huge hit, guys. I mean, it puts it several spots above those small one-volume tanks by unknowns, but come on.

Yeah, but that doesn't necessarily reflect the Japanese popularity.

As for me, I was kind of suprised Bleach beat Naruto. I expected it to be the other way around.

[Referring to Ouran] Correct, that doesn't necessarily translate seeing as how many shows often times do well on one side of pacific and terrible on the other. But from chatting with enough folks I just had this feeling that Ouran was fairly big both among US Otaku and Japanese Otaku.

As for Bleach beating Naruto now that surprise me, in fact I just double check it because when I first looked at that list I could of swore if was the other way around. Perhaps that because I assumed it would be Naruto 1 and then Bleach.

I haven't heard anything about Ouran's popularity in Japan. I'd imagine its at least decently popular (well enough to run 10 volumes and spawn an anime) but it suprises me that it is that popular relative to these other ones. Then again, I had no clue To-Love-Ru was very popular.

On the other hand, its hard to get an accurate picture without knowing all the other new or recent releases that didn't quite make the top 10. It may just been a slow week. And maybe kids are just waiting for their allowance or something to pick up the new volume or Naruto.

Well, I think the reason the Blue Dragon manga is doing decently well, is because it's illustrated by Takashi Obata, the artist for Hikaru no Go and Death Note, not by Toriyama...
