Hopefully, FUNi will do a better job w/ Blu Ray than those DBZ discs.

I dunno much about blu-ray discs.... I'm assuming they cost more, but do they play on normal DVD players, or do I have to buy a different one?

Great, the US anime market is now going with different formats between companies
 . While i prefer Blue-Ray over HD-DVD, I would much rather that all the companies just choose a format and stick with it. With Funimation choosing Blue-Ray and Bandai choosing HD-DVD, the burden will be on the customer. Either fork over the money for both players, choose one company and stick with it, or lastly just stick with DVD (with the possibility of combining you collection with HD-DVD or Blue-Ray and just DVDs for the other company). Either way, its just a big pain over all else.

Both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD don't play on standard DVD players, and both require newer players designed for each standard. However, Bandai Visual has been shipping Freedom on a hybrid disc, which sandwiches a standard DVD layer with a HD DVD layer on a single disc. YES!!! Another battle of Beta vs. VHS! I refuse to buy in either format until there is a clear winner. I refuse to end up with a pile of the wrong format discs like with beta. Go ISO!

Actually, as the article mentions, Bandai Visual USA is supporting both formats. While Freedom is HD DVD, Honneamise is both HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc, and Akira will be at least on Blu-ray. |

They should go with VMD discs. The VMD players will be avaiable for both PCs and the entertainment center by the end of August. While BlueRay is popular now, VMD will win in the end because you can use it with your computer. And it cost only $150 for the VMD player. And it plays DVD, HD and BlueRay discs as well.

Gah.... there's nothing wrong with regular DVDs!
I just hope they don't do blu-ray only for some of their recent liscences.... this hobby is expensive enough already, without me having to replace my NEW DVD player. D: |

Well if they don't decide soon the price on Dual-format DVD players will start radically dropping and the war will end with a fizzle instead of a bang.

Seriously? That's just plain stupid. Although the Blockbuster thing may have something to it, I wouldn't have guessed that the rental market would be a big factor. Since the entry point for HD-DVD players is a hell of a lot lower for both Xbox 360 owners (< $200) and for standalone players ($300 for HD-DVD vs $500 for Blu-ray) it's a shame that they aren't just going with both formats. |

This is great news. It would be sad for the fansubs to look a gazillion times better than the domestic release. =( I hope whoever gets Hayate no Gotoku does an HD release... |

Yeah, I ain't getting on this bandwagon till I know the winner and it gets cheaper. Seriously though, the only reason Blue-ray is doing so well is the PS3. Noticed on the weekend that its had a price drop of $150. Woo, its now only twice the price of a Wii. Yeah, I don't ever plan to buy a PS3. I like my Wii just fine.
I think we're starting to get too many formats out there. Who really has the money to spend buying movies for PSP, Blue-ray, HD, regular and whatnot? |

For now, it's far from stupid. Even though the cheapest HD DVD player is cheaper than the Sony PlayStation 3, people still buy more Sony PlayStation 3s than all HD DVD players in North America combined. The North American HD DVD Promotional Group said that more than 150,000 non-game-console players have been sold by June of 2007. According to Microsoft, Xbox 360's drive accounted for only 155,000 units in the United States by June of 2007. Sony says that the PlayStation 3, by itself, has already sold (not just shipped, but also sold) 1.4 million units by May in North America. That's small in game console terms, but several times bigger than the combined HD DVD player sales. That could change with Toshiba's newest price drop on its cheapest HD DVD player. For now though, Funimation isn't stupid to jump into the Blu-ray market first because it's the one that's crossed the 1-million mark first. |

Xbox 360 plus HD DVD player = 600 dollar PS3 with built in Blu-Ray = 500 dollar You do the math. Xbox might have killer games, but I'm not gonna pay 200 dollar extra for a HD-DVD player when the Sony PS3 has blu-ray built in.
Maybe to you, but there are a lot of people that appreciate their shows and movie in HD. Don't worry thought because DVD won't be leaving the market for a while, possibly until there is a clear winner. |
