You just know if it was TCG regions banning Foreign nationals, it would be called racist and probably reach main stream news.

I'm not sure what to say about this. But putting a rule forbidding foreign and non-Japanese nationals from taking part in the tournaments is not a good look.
I'm not even a Yu-Gi-Oh! fan, but this type of gatekeeping and exclusion is basically a "F" you to international fanbases. By doing that, Konami can end up losing a sizeable western fanbase and also non-Japanese Asian fanbase by putting that exclusionary rule for the tournament. |

Theres really no good reason to even do this, dont even know why it should be limited to "japanese", should really be open to anyone who can read and speak the language.

I assume this is related to the increasing anti-tourist precautions a lot of places in Japan have begun adopting. Ever since Japan allowed foreign tourists post-Covid they've had a number of issues with people causing trouble and making scenes, from regular tourists being jerks to big streamers using Japan as a playground to farm for content.

This feels like a weird decision. A permanent address should be enough. I'd understand non-residents, but requiring outright citizenship seems silly. Imagine if the US did this.

This has been a rising issue in Japan for the past year. I've read a lot of stories in the news of foreigners assaulting geiko/maiko in the streets and treating them like sightseeing attractions, desecrating shrines like destroying statues and using noren like towels to clean themselves or their belongings, taking videos and photos in private areas without consent, and in general causing massive problems for the residents. Many Japanese cities have banned foreigners from private streets all together as a result and many businesses will not do business with foreigners. You would occasionally see this already especially in rural areas not commonly visited by tourists but it's increased a lot this past year due to the trouble. |

Just as a note, this wording excludes foreign residents and those with permanent residency. There are foreigners who have lived in Japan for decades without changing their nationality. Absolutely ridiculous.

Not really, people switch teams constantly and move all over the world to play for a different countries national team. Look at Japan's national Rugby team as an example; they have 2 South Africans, a New Zealander and a Thai player in the team. Yes it has become a big problem. It is strange to see that after acceptance of foreigners has increased over the years foreigners have decided to abuse that acceptance to cause trouble. It is sad but I am already starting to see some people view foreigners poorly again. |

It is not as bad as you all are thinking, all you need to play in japanese nationals is to be a Japanese citizen (aka a Japanese green card) and residence in Japan. This stops people that have dual citizenship I’m coming to nationals and being able to play even though they don’t live in Japan.
In the US we don’t have it like that but you have more hoops to jump through to get to US nationals then in Japan |
