Thanks. I was wondering how Speed Racer would do over there.
Next time they bank on Japan, though, they gotta make sure that show was popular there in the first place. Wink But man, if it does that weakly, I'd be surprised if DBZ had a chance. Sure, it's still lucrative, but so's Final Fantasy, and that didn't save Spirits Within.

Why does the news title say "Japanese Box Office, July 5–6: HanaDan Stays at #1" when it's obviously a #2? Laughing

Yeah, 'Speed Racer's' box office performance is very disappointing (and is probably a bit of a rude awakening for Warner Bros. ). I was hoping, Japan would push the movie to $100 million worldwide gross and now it won't happen.

kind of sad about speed racer in general. I thought it was a pretty good movie. Not mind blowing good, but a good watch.

not even 100 million worldwide, and it probably cost more than that to make.

Nevertheless, congratulations to Hana Yori Dango.

I had my suspicions that the Japanese audience wouldn't go "gaga" over Speed Racer.

I've heard that Mach GoGoGO! isn't nearly as big a nostalgia anime in Japan as Tetsuwan Atomu (Astro Boy), pretty much the reverse of the nostalgia situation in North America. In Japan, it was just one of dozens of anime from that era. I'm not saying it's unknown over there, but it might not have the same resonance with older audiences as it would have over here, not that childhood memories of Speed Racer was enough to fuel ticket sales on this side of the Pacific either.

Well, it's not all bad. At least they set this record: Laughing

The announcement follows a record-setting movie event in Japan, where 25,000 people, the largest IMAX audience ever for a single screening, enjoyed the Japanese premiere of SPEED RACER: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE on June 29 at the Tokyo Dome. The Tokyo Dome, which is a traditional venue for concerts and sporting events, was converted into a huge IMAX theatre for the event.
