So it looks like Muhyo and Roji has, for at least one more volume, dodged the bullet of being deemed "too mediocre to bother with." This installment manages to keep one's interest with a sudden turn of events halfway through, and it looks like there may be a whole new world of adventure in store for Roji.

I'm betting the author will play us on this one, too. This whole "get lazy on the story progression until the end" approach is getting old. Really, the only thing he's got are those cliff-hangers. And it's not like he has to make the fights spectacular-just interesting.

A couple of flashback chapters also help to add to the depth of the overall series, showing that the characters are worth caring about and that there's more to them than vanquishing troublesome ghosts every several chapters.

Actually, I was hoping that they'd go back to ghost-hunting, since they seem to be wasting time on research and training.

While the series always retains its fondness for gratuitous melodrama, the plot definitely kicks in around this point in the series, and it was pretty damn great from that point on.
Definitely helps that he has the best monster and spell design in the business.

Can I say that I'm a major sucker for the monster designs?

I read the series and I do notice this is a pretty medicore series. It's good and all, but it nevers blows my mind. But the twists in the series are always great, I love the monster designs, and the Magic Law is very interesting. It is stuff like this that keeps my attention. Otherwise, the art work on some of these characters are ugly, the story isn't speculater at this point, and this series doesn't keep my attention for long. I'll stick it out to the end like I always do, but after it ends, I'm selling this series off on ebay, at a garage sale, or donate to Goodwill. It's the hard truth.
