Go Nodame again! I see lots of discussion around why we don't have more anime that would appeal to a broader (and older) demographic in the U.S. That is, titles other than the standard juvenile fare (which I'm not knockin' by any means). A recent thread discussed the likelihood of anime going mainstream anytime soon.

While shojo is not everyone's flavor of entertainment, this show would rank high against that produced in any other medium (e.g., American TV) for its content. It's breaking records in Japan. Granted, America isn't the best audience for classical music. Still, the quality of the writing almost makes it a moot point.

Nodame would be a great fit for broadcast on PBS, or Bravo or the like, which would expose anime to a much broader audience. I just can't figure why this isn't at least licensed for DVD in the U.S. Maybe someone can give some insight on that.

Even if Nodame were to be licensed, it's possible that it just gets the Honey & Clover treatment of going years without any sort of annoucement as to when DVDs would be available.

Companies just haven't seen a shoujo/josei title sell as much here in the US as shounens and seinens have. I mean, sure, Fruits Basket sells well, but that doesn't really stray too far from the norm by only having a reverse harem.

That said, I'm happy for Nodame. I was disappointed to learn this season will only be 11 episodes, but now the the announcement of the 3rd season (and seeing how well Pari-hen is doing ratings wise) I hope the next season has more episodes, mostly so I can hear all the music performances again.
