I understand that not everyone likes Vic as Ed but he always seems to complain about him being cast in other stuff. And yes, it does cut off early, I actually want to know what he was going to say.

there wasn't an overall theme this week and lately there often isn't; I fully understand that it's kind of based on news, and there just wasn't much news to comment on in the past week.

But how do you "talk to viewers"? (separate from fanmail).

(shrug)

Question:
just today, I checked another of my local retailers for Protoculture Addicts. I've checked many stores in the New York Area. Today was particularly jarring, because it was an actual comics store; and unlike when I ask at a Barnes & Noble, the guy at the counter actually knew what ProtoCulture Addicts was, by name, when i mentioned it; he took out his orders list and he hasn't carried it since 2008.

I realize PA switched over to being a bi-ANNUAL trade magazine, not really news-oriented, in the past year...but I have never seen it on a shelf. Anywhere. And I live in a major city.

Is ANN, the website, simply going to displace and absorb PA, the magazine? And has it done so already?

Even Otaku USA is half online now...though I commend them for being smart enough to make that shift.

Question: Neo-ADV (Section 23, et al) just posted a lot of new release dates and acquisitions. They're even getting back into English dubs, like for Clannad and Ghost Hound. Why, they even English dubbed the lucrative "Halo Legends" franchise. And they do a better job of meeting street dates than Bandai, and get "new stuff" on a comparable level to Media Blasters lately.

Why have you avoided directly talking about Neo-ADV? I mean the podcast doesn't have a set topic, it would take maybe 10 minutes to discuss, and you've...tangentially mentioned it but never addressed it head-on.

Well that is to say, when ADV "closed" on September 1st, 2009 there was an "editorial" commenting on the situation.....which then demanded that none of us use it as a citable source (for wikipedia).

WHY are we tippy-toeing around they facts? Why are you avoiding just directly explaining what "Section 23" is?

It's treated like some in-joke that a few people know, but presume is public knowledge.

It's impossible for Section 23 to promote itself when everyone seems afraid to just state what it is.

What confuses me is this: what possible side effect is there to flat out saying "Section 23 is essentially ADV with a changed name"?

And if there ARE negative side effects of admitting it...it's so obvious, that I don't understand why they haven't happened already.

If Sojitz has a debt-claim on ADV, haven't they put two and two together after SIX MONTHS?

QUESTION: Many reviewers are saying that the release of Rebuild of Evangelion 1.11 is a new benchmark for Blu Ray quality, and the story and dub are pretty good. (see: ANN's recent review...and lets ignore the in-time-for-Christmas rush-job with severe screen darkness problems that was, "Eva 1.01")

However, it's got practically non-existent special features. There's basically a 15 minute long "Making of" video with *no narration*...it's basically a music video montage of animation cel to storyboard to animatic to screen. And the rest is trailers.

Now I'm sitting around wondering why it doesn't have two hours or more of special features...NOT including a commentary track...and cast interviews. Much like the Lord of the Rings DVDs.

This isn't some minor title: "Rebuild of Evangelion" was one of the top movies in Japan, and FUNimation thinks its important enough to give it a Blu Ray release.

***I fully realize that with the industry collapsing, there isn't much money or time to get good special features. And that across-the-industry, there aren't really good special features anymore.

Should we, as fans, just "settle for less"? Because at least for a major title like Eva, I'm left asking "you didn't even bother to interview your own voice actors?"

Some other native HD Blu-ray releases from FUNi are:
Samurai 7
Shigurui: Death Frenzy
One Piece movie 8
Origin

And I think Vexille too, but don't quote me on that.

A lot of stuff from FUNimation is set to get a release on Blu-ray, so it's not a question of importance, but whether if they can and if it will sell.

I'm not sure why you'd want two hours of extras for a movie that's basically a recap. And from what I know, FUNimation got every extra-- aside from a complete copy of the script-- that was on the Blu-ray release over in Japan, so obviously the creators over there didn't care to include anything special for this movie and they're most likely holding out on extras until 2.22.

I remember you complaining about the voice actor commentary tracks that Eva has had in the past, so I'm not sure why you'd want more of that.

Sorry about that - full file's been uploaded now, there was a hiccup during the original transfer. The full show should work via the frontpage player. iTunes will take some time to refresh.

Uh, they volunteer to be on the show and we have them on? How is this at all confusing?

We own Protoculture Addicts. If we hadn't bought it, it'd have gone out of business years ago.

Last issue we published was in 2008. We will be publishing one new issue this year, likely in the summer.

What? We've talked about Section23 directly many times and in one of our very first shows from last year we spent like 10 minutes explaining what went on with that. I understand you probably haven't listened to every episode but before you ask us "why haven't you addressed this?!?!" maybe you should check.

Again, it's been explained. What you have to realize is that nobody who works there will comment on the record about anything at all in relation to that whole thing so there is no official means of confirming the information. So publishing a hard news story about it would be bad journalism. We can however comment on what we know with the caveat that we cannot absolutely confirm any of it through a quotable source.

Again that has been said countless times. Yeesh.

Thoughts:
Re: Pacific World War 2 movies
I've seen Flag of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, on the same weekend, and that was traumatic enough for me. I recommend them both, but primarily the latter. Man that is a painful movie.

re: Ouran High School Host Club
The two series (anime and manga) are very different from each other. The first is a fourth-wall-breaking parody with some character development and story; the latter is a genre-savvy romantic comedy, with a full plot but with a sense of self-awareness. I actually like them both, but they are different.

re: Blu-Ray
Why do people release things that weren't in high def in high def? Is it just the money?

re: Online manga
I'm with you, Zac, I prefer the book. It's easier to flip through and find things, I hate having to scroll to see the whole page, I hate the glare. Kindle is one thing, the internet is another, but the cell phone thing boggles my mind. Yes, there are a few series where I feel I need to read the next one, but I try to read it only once and then wait for the volume releases for the second time. Books are my preference, always.

Wow, your voice is rather different than I'd imagined, much higher. (And yes, I imagine what you all sound like. I am weird.) You know, Dragonball Z might have an awful English dub, I never listened to it. But hearing a woman's voice coming out of a super built muscular adult man really creeped me out.

As for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, the fact that it got closer to the manga actually made the differences from the manga feel worse than the first one, which was really off-manga. And AMEN ON THE FMA DUB. Why on earth do people think that Vic Mignogna (sp?) is perfect as Ed? It's a 40-year old man trying to play a short adolescent 15-year old. VOICE DOES NOT MATCH!! I mean, Romi Paku isn't perfect, but she sounds closer than Mr. Mignogna.

re: Anime/Manga in Hollywood
More than 3! You're forgetting Blood: The Last Vampire. Actually, forgetting that might not be a bad idea.

My real hope is for Battle Angel Alita if James Cameron works on it. The others, I don't know. They are at least better choices for live action, with more realistic art styles in the original.

Also, the movie called Priest is not an adaptation of Priest. It claims it is, but it's a total in-name-only. Maybe it won't be awful, but it won't be Priest.

Section 23 is ADV with a changed name.

Texas is a corporate welfare state, so there are all sorts of scummy, ethically questionable laws that allow reorganization and debt manipulation. ADV essentially escaped from under Sojitz by using a loophole. The section of law used to reorganize: Section 23. Thus, the joke.

However, Section 23 is not going to issue an official press release stating "Suck it Sojitz! Loopholez rool!" You just have to connect the dots.

The truth is, though I'm a male, I'm voiced by a female voice talent. Laughing

I would like to point out, by the way, that I in no way equate the dub of DBZ with the dub of FMA. If I woke up tomorrow and the DBZ dub was as good as FMA's dub, I probably wouldn't complain about it. The FMA dub disappointed me but the DBZ dub is painful.

I think that another problem with sports anime and even American sports movies is that even sports fans don't particularly want to watch them; part of the excitement of watching sports is that (assuming you're watching live) this is what's actually happening, to real people, right at that moment. You never know what's going to happen next. Watching pre-scripted matches in anime and movies just isn't as exciting because those are actors, not real people, and how things play out depends more on the intent of the creators than the skill and/or luck of the players.

Basically: sports fans don't like them because it's not real and anime fans don't like because, well, it's sports. Even if you are that rare blend of a sport fan and an anime fan, there's no guarantee that you'll like a sport anime.
