I had such high hopes for the series. I wouldn't have given it a D, but it certainly felt like a 24 episode series shoved into 12 episodes, and sacrificed so much potential. Oh well.

I know I've complained before, but why is the name Demon King Daimao?
Is redundancy just something we like now? Like with Moribito. |

A lot of the later part of the series was too rushed, uninteresting, and forgettable. It definitely seemed like they were trying to cram too much into too few episodes. It's kind of a shame as I liked some of the fun moments with the characters earlier in the series (particularly with Korone), but then it just got to disappointing me.

This series was clearly had no budget and made "on the cheap." Without a budget... fanservice alone can only do so much..

The review hit the nail on the head. This show had many good things going but it was all wasted in the end. The forum comments on Crunchy for episode 7 were pretty funny to read. Lots of folks wondering what in the hell they just watched. I wondered if it would have been better at 24-26 episodes. More time to develop the characters and cause more tension in the finale. But then I realized there are plenty of great anime shows that ran 12-13 eps. So length should never be an excuse for failure.
Korone teasing Akuto was funny as it seemed to break the mold of her just being the Rei prototype character. The sea slug humor was not. A continuation would be as redundant as the series title. |

Agreed with the review. The halfway mark is a watershed on this show. I found the first six episodes mildly entertaining if mostly hollow content-wise. Then someone in the production committee probably realized they only had six more episodes to take the show through the whole demon king's awakening stuff, and the show takes a nosedive, never to get back up. We are quickly paraded through a succession events and plots and conspiracies and battles and OH THE DRAMA and... and we're supposed to care about what is happening. Stuff is plopped on the stage with zero preparation but we're told it's all according to plan. The show presents a few good ideas but the execution is horridly flawed.
In the end it still thinks to be a harem comedy because the reset button is pressed so that we can have our Color Wars back. Perhaps it should have stuck to that, so it would have the reputation of an utterly mediocre show instead of a complete trainwreck (and not in the good way like Code Geass was). |

the review sums up the show pretty well. They should have just made Korone the main character und continued with the comedy.

While I wouldn't have been quite so harsh (I did at least find the second half of the series watchable), I must agree that the second half of the series has issues and Carl defined them pretty well. This one certainly had potential, but the last 3-4 episodes were such a mess.

This review basically pointed out all the issues I had with it.
The fanservice became detracting, and served more as a plot point than mere icing on a burned-over cake. The characters acted as pigeonholed stereotypes without any warrantable depth to make the half-assed melodrama affective. And to top it all off, the muddled direction and writting was being realized by people who had no idea what to do with the story, evidenced by the inconsistent tone. (Sometimes it's a blatant fanservice show, then it becomes a silly rom-com, only to finally transform into a full-blown action series.) To be frank, I thought it was a waste of time and money that could easily be used for something with more creative concern. |

In episode seven the bizarre 'Mister X' appears, and (again) I was confused by mixed signals. Is he more of a threat, or a joke? What did they say he was trying to accomplish, and why? It seemed like a lot of effort was put into this guy, yet ultimately he was just a villain of the week. A neat touch was Hiroshi getting a chance to play a major part, rather than just remaining a comical sidekick to Akuto. Episode nine was kind of neat as it bounced back and forth with a touch of skill between several different subplots, and gave us the impression that a likeable character might be in distinct danger. On the other hand, we get more magickal gibberish, like 'Law of Identity' and 'the Gods wish to be ruled', which is unexplained and makes little sense. The general mood of episode ten felt like the series had already reached it's climax, yet I couldn't help wondering if I had accidentally skipped an episode. The plot of this show seems so scrambled that I have only a general idea of what's going on, which doesn't bode well for me getting a major thrill at the climax.
In episode eleven countless characters which I care/remember little about pop out of nowhere. It feels like the makers tried to spread the credit and fame of the final victory among too many people. I asked myself, What the f--- is going on? Who is this 'guy with the creepy suit'? This was not making much sense to begin with, yet new plot strands are tacked on anyhow. A confusing show like this demands tremendous concentration in order to keep track of what's going on, but when the signs are that I am unlikely to get my money's worth, it's not forthcoming. Hurry up and wrap this nonsense up. Fortunately, once all the supporting characters had gotten their spotlight time in episode eleven, episode twelve was more focused and better than I was expecting. The climactic fight scene was actually kind of cool. There was too much nonsense last week, and in the weeks before, for me to completely understand what's happening (a dragon sprouts computer cables?), but when that's the case a little 'coolness' goes a long way. I can't help feeling that just like the first episode, extra effort was made to ensure quality in this last one. In short, Ichiban UnD might be summarized as two good episodes and ten average ones. I read that they stuffed like somewhere near five volumes worth of the novel into this short series. If that were the case, I think they just went straight for fun and fanservice.
After Akuto finally established himself as the demon king, I thought the actual story would come forward. But they just torpedoed through with so much nonsense at once that I lost track of what was going on. |

I'm a pretty tolerate person, I liked the character designs for the most part, and the premise of how the main character would probably have to accept his evil role in order to save the world; but I totally would have given this series a "D" as well. It was just so poorly handled and executed. The way the plot jump around to the next and how other plot developments seem to appear and disappear without any real attention given to them; it was just bad.
And honestly I didn't find the fights to be much. I thought they were kind of bad in quality. But it could be like Carl mentioned and the fact that you didn't care for the protagonist nor really disliked the antagoist, so in effect, didn't care what took place in the battles nor their outcomes. And I probably just wanted to finish the series and get it over with since their were only 2 episodes left so I didn't give it my usual attention. |

I agree with all the points made in the review.
However, it leaves out the good parts for the most part, and man, they were good. I thought the show was worth a half-hour of my week. But I would rather still be watching it now, and having things make sense, even moderately. And man, what a reset button that was. Usually reset buttons solve problems. But this one just takes us right back to the beginning. If nothing else, they could make another series more in the vein of the first part of the show, without all the relationship drama with the Demon King getting in the way spoiler[(but sadly no Peterhausen)]. |

OK fine, so the story line went a little too fast for my liking. But I still think that the way they made the characters personalities was better compared to other anime that's out there. They also didn't over do it when introducing the back grounds of the main character like some shows would constantly have the character have flash backs through out the show, gets kind of boring.
