Why is it that so many people who don't understand things like grammar and punctuation fancy themselves "writers?" Based on his (admittedly very exciting) letter, I picture the flake's anime going something like this:
character 1: hey lets fight okay character 2: yes itll be jawdropping character 1: also ur a hot gurl character 2: i no thats where the romance comes in character 1: ok cool what about the morals character 2: i dunno Not to say that a text-message-speak anime couldn't be hilariously amazing, but without any actual description of the product... |

The 50-year old dad who likes Death Note and now compares everything to it sounds like something out of The Onion, made me laugh so bad. And it's true, we end up comparing subsequent entries into a largely unknown canon to the first thing that hooked us into it.

I have successfully gotten my dad into anime. He is 65 years old. The other day he told me he thought about going to Hastings to buy his own anime but he didn't know if he'd be able to pick something he'd like so he didn't. He did say he was going to check out some he saw was free from On Demand. We have so far watched these shows/movies together:
Urasawa's Monster(he didn't like it much but it was his gateway show that proved how mature anime could be, a fact he was not previously aware of) Master Keaton The Irresponsible Captain Tylor (he loved it) Cowboy Bebop (he loved it) Trigun (he loved it) Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers (he loved it) Sword of the Stranger (he loved it Blue Submarine No 6. (he enjoyed it) The Castle of Cagliostro (he enjoyed it a lot) Nausicaa (he loved it) Castle in the Sky (he loved it) My Neighbor Totoro (he liked it but did not expect so much warm and fuzzy, though it did remind him fondly of his childhood so score another victory for Miyazaki) Most recently we watched Excel Saga....he loved it! Possibly more than the others! |

I'm a little sad to not see my response to the sports anime/manga question used while two responses that use the "anime fans don't like sports" stereotype were used. Granted, some of what I said was brought up in other reponses, like how anime companies can't just say "This is an anime revolving around [insert sport here]," and hope people will buy it, but the other part of my response was how people continually like to hide use and behind things like that stupid stereotype, which keeps them from actually having to explain themselves in a more exact fashion. Just like how anime companies stay vague in explaining sports anime they license you can't just say "Otakus don't like sports" and ignore everything else.
Oh well, at least that question about the dad who loves Death Note was entertaining. |

I'm guessing people have it in for Love Hina because of Negima. As for Azumanga Daioh, it's the moe backlash which probably hurt it.

The Death Note Dad story was really funny. Death Note was one of the shows I used to get my brother into anime too

Perhaps Brian simply couldn't understand what you wrote. Kami knows I couldn't follow those three sentences, and I read them plenty of times hoping something would come together for me.
Yes, exactly, you can't be too safe! Brian, he wanted you to meet him at a coffee shop so he could show you his awesome story ideas and materials, and you stood him up! He might have even offered you a choice between a red and a blue pill. Who knows what you missed out on. |

I still don't know why Americans don't like sports manga. EU loves soccer, that's why Captain Tsubasa were very popular over there.
It's either American anime fans are in fact don't like sports or they got too much sport drama in real life already. I have to agree with the "The 50-year old dad who likes Death Note" I don't really like Eva, Baccano, Mushi, Lain, either, but i do like Hellsing and Ghost in the shell. He should show him just Hellsing ova, and other similar shows like Monster and don't give him new show. Let him wait couple months before giving him anything news. One show per anime season is good. haha |

It's more a case of those who like anime don't really care for sports and those who like sports have little interest in anime. But look at how few sports TV shows there are in America. Aside from Friday Night Lights and One Tree Hill (which is dying in the ratings) right now that's about it. And the history of sports dramas on TV isn't all that great. Americans tend to view sports as reality TV and find the sports themselves create enough drama. |

It's cool to hear that there are some people who have gotten their parents (older parents I mean, if they're in their thirties it hardly counts)! I've only just recently been able to convince my mom that not ALL animation is just for kids-- by which I mean, Pixar-- and I've been an anime fan for well over a decade :p Anyway, to the kid who can't find anime that he thinks relates to Death Note, you could always try to find something that is similar to your dad's taste in non-anime tv. If he watches nighttime dramas or comedies it probably wouldn't be too hard to find an anime series that parallels them in some aspects (hey, he might even be into sports and like some of those much-maligned sports series!) As Brian said, it's not like that's guaranteed, but it wouldn't hurt to try. |

As far as I'm concerned, in terms of the early days of harem-popularity, Tenchi is a much-better example than Love Hina on harem done right. Love Hina would have been better if Naru wasn't insanely unlikable. It manages to be a good show despite such a huge flaw, but it shouldn't be the standard all harems are held to. Heck, Negima (even though it evolves into something MUCH, MUCH more than a harem) does the "harem" angle better than Love Hina did as Asuna is much more likable than Naru (although still pretty low on my list of who I want to see Negi end up with, but that's not a reflection on how I think of the character by herself) and they make it less obvious who the main character will end up with (I hate it when a series can't be subtle about this. Yes, I'm looking at you, Clannad).
Now, I know some people will say, "Naru's not as bad in the manga!", well the article seemed to be focusing on the anime so that's a moot point. Wait, the dad must have watched TWO episodes of Baccano, as Issac and Miria only have 20 seconds of screentime in the first episode and they're actually acting fairly normal in the scene. The rest of the episode is talking about story/characters, and then showing people getting shot up, stabbed, or tortured, and later discussions about mafia dealings and trains. None of that is "silly". While I have zero interest in watching sports (tiny people throw balls! Um......cool?), sports fiction is another thing as it has actual story/characters. The problem is finding a genuinely good one to start with. Big Wind-Up! looked good, but the half-season sets are OOP IIRC, and I'm NEVER buying one of those ugly-as-hell SAVE sets with the hideous green spines (WHY couldn't you stick to the removable SAVE stickers, FUNi?!), hoping most others will follow suit and FUNi will fix the design problem. Cross Game looks good, but I fear it's the type of manga that Viz won't finish so I'm hesitant to start it. Stuff like Slam Dunk and Eyeshield 21 seem too long for me to be interested in. So far the closest thing I have to sports anime/manga is both the anime and manga of Bamboo Blade. |
