Guess I'll be the first (and maybe only) person to comment on this. Glad to see the reviewer is finally seeing what I see in this series. This second arc is slow-going and short on action but you do get a better sense of the characters' emotional state. Yes, Zero is angsty (and that's what I love about him) but he does more than just navel-gaze. He is a man of action, as well. Whereas Kaname just manipulates people behind the scenes. Actually, I found Kaname to just as angsty in this arc.
I follow the scans and the story is just starting to pick up again, so if anyone's been tempted to quit, just wait a little longer. Oh, and Zero doen't zap Aido. The bars on the door of the wagon they're riding in are made to "zap" vampires who touch them. |

OK, the bar thing makes sense, although in the Viz translation Zero says "If you don't settle down, I'll use the taser on you again." Different translators' interpretations?
I was really pleasantly surprised by this series. To be honest, I had dropped it back when ShojoBeat went under and only picked it up again when I was given a review copy. But I think I'm hooked again...

It looks to me like the little device on the table that Aido's glances at in the next pannel is meant to be a taser of some sort. I think the implication is that poor Aido really was tasered offpage, which makes the threats that ensue more chilling. Considering the disturbing implications in the volume about what Kaname may have done in the past which Yuki sees in his memories (if I read that scene right) - not to mention that he's apparently left Aido to rot - things could have been made really black and white as far as who our sympathies lie with. But the fact that Zero - who up until this point has been extremely sympathetic - is apparently so hurt by Yuki's decision that he's seriously considering torturing an innocent person gives the story shades of grey. |

Well, I guess I'm going to have to examine the panels more closely, because I don't remember any tazer, except on the bars. And I didn't get the feeling Zero was going to torture Aido for any reason, unless it was because he was being his usual pain in the butt. Aido isn't tortured any more than he usually is; and when Kaito brings out the chainsaw it's obvious the whole "torture" thing is mostly a joke. Vampire Knight is dark but not that dark. But I guess whenever Kaname punishes Aido it's all meant to be fun and games.
*Sorry, but I gotta defend Zero. IMHO, Kaname is the "evil" one. |
