I'm very eager for TRSI to ship the copy of this that I preordered. The first volume was my favorite manga of last year and I found that I couldn't put it down. Somehow it was as compelling to me as some potboiler thriller might be to most people.
I'm pleased that the relatively modest demeanor and realism of the first volume holds through the second. There's a distinct lack of sensationalism or excess in the storytelling and art that contributes a lot to the appeal of the book. It's nice to have something trust the reader to recognize the significance and intensity of events. The untranslated words weird. I can imagine retaining sayonara; it's familiar to many English speakers and could almost feel poetic, but I can't see any point in retaining hai. Are there any notes provided that account for those choices? |

I took this scene as a direct response to Shuichi acting uncomfortable earlier which caused Yuki to think s/he didn't want to be there rather than any claim toward impure motive. (I'd cite the page but my copy isn't at hand). I took the Japanese in the text as a replacement of the original using english at some parts (this can be heard in the anime) but I'm not sure if this was the case or not. EDIT: Thorn says he left words untranslated as they were "ritual formalities" http://twitter.com/matt_a_thorn_en/status/160265717005037569 Quibbles aside, an excellent review

I found Yuki and her boyfriend rather fascinating. I'm very curious to learn what their process was like where Shii fully accepted Yuki as a woman and stopped seeing her as the boy he used to know in school. And kudos to Matt Thorn for clarifying to me about homophobia/gay tolerance as it is in Japan, whereas over there it seems to all boil down to mere connections.

I hadn't thought of that; that's a good motive for Yuki. Although Shii-chan's discomfort at finding that Yuki had been inviting the kids over is in part what led me to my initial interpretation. (I don't have my copy at hand either - must stop lending stuff to sisters immediately after I write the review!)
That was my initial thought as well, but I just felt it disrupted the flow of reading. Thanks for Thorn's response - that does clear it up as to a normally excellent translator making an odd choice! As a teacher, I don't agree with his decision; as a casual translator, I understand it.

I dislike being nitpicky like this but think it's worth mentioning something that's a standard in the GLBT world and pretty much true everywhere else: A transgendered man or transman (however you say it, the meaning is similar) always refers to someone who was born female and has decided to or is transitioning to match their male identity. So no neither Yuki nor Shuichi are transgendered men. The transgendered man (boy) would be Yoshino.
