Nice review although I don't agree with the score of A- for the dubbing part.
It definitely has a fun opening and overall theme. The story of a girl living as an otaku and its strange animation is just something hard to not forget. The soundtrack and comedy are also great for a relaxing paced anime than the traditional romance drama, mecha action, etc. The art like I said before is strange and gives that josei feeling. The storylines are also attractive despite being short. Overall, interesting series and great review. I might buy this on DVD so I can watch what the review mentioned:

I absolutely love this cast! You're right in the two English standouts: Josh G. is great as Kuranosuke. He really sounds like a girl without having that fake high-pitched voice. Monica Rial is amazing as well. And while it seems that most people hated/really disliked Mayaya, I thought that she was actually one of my favorite sisters.
And to the commenter above, Princess Jellyfish is josei, so it's fitting that it looks like it. |

What would you score it as? I haven't bothered looking up the dub yet but as of late I've found the dub scoring on this site to on the high side. |

Princess Jellyfish is awesome/touching indeed. I'm not usually a fan of josei anime, but I loved this short series. I hope my (pre-ordered even) copy arrives soon so I can watch the extras.

I don't share the appraisal of the non-ending; I think they just adapted the manga until they ran out of running time. Spending all that time on Shu only for the plots involving him not particularly go anywhere or to give the villain more depth in the last episode don't make much sense otherwise.
It could really use a second series to take it somewhere that makes more sense but it's been over a year since it aired so that's sadly unlikely. I find it interesting to note that in synopsis, this series sounds like a silly soap-opera (Hot guy falls in love with plain girl! Illegitimate son of the minister is being kept away from his beautiful foreign mom! Sex, money and power!) but the execution is pretty much gold and it doesn't feel like that at all. I don't agree that "this boy" was a very effective attempt to deal with somehow representing Japanese gendered pronouns in English; it's a somewhat odd affectation that the subs don't have Kuronosuke engage in except when that joke comes up, and it doesn't explain why Tsukimi tries to cover by suddenly singing "ole!" over and over. It's kind of a nightmare translation scenario so I don't know how they could have done it better, though.
That scene floored me. It single-handedly catapulted my opinion of this series from "charming" to "really quite good!" Last edited by Fronzel on Fri Mar 02, 2012 4:53 am; edited 1 time in total |

I find it surprising how not enough people seem to think how much of a rarity it is to have an Anime series about a cast of genuinely geeky girls, both in looks and in personality, that some studio in Japan actually did a series like this and were able to do it so well in a time where moe-pandering to otaku boys is the most commercially safe thing to do. Heck, having an overweight girl in the cast (and one that's not dumb) is a rarity unto itself. I thought it had an upbeat albeit open-ended conclusion as well, having thematically come full-cirlce, but would love to see a continuation of this nicely-done story in some form. We might never have a series like this again after all.

Nice review. I didn't find the molestation subplot particularly disturbing, though. It was rather amusing in my opinion with The Vixen trying to trick The Male Virgin and falling into her own trap in the end. I can see that others might disagree here and i freely admit that i wouldn't consider it half as fun if the (gender-) roles were reversed...spoiler[anyhow, i think the main purpose was to teach Shoko that she can't manipulate anyone or anything with her body and make her start questioning herself,] but i guess whoever wants to find out where this leads will have to read the manga since i doubt we'll ever get a second season.
Btw, my favourite character hands down was the Benz-loving driver, he should get his own sidestory!

So, I take it that the subs are quite localized? Regarding the 'Ore' thing, another less pretty but effective method to go about retaining the meaning would be to put in translator notes. |

I thought Mayaya was supposed to be irritating as it's part of her obsession/character; She's not only a fan of the Three Kingdoms, she's loudly a fan of the Three Kingdoms. Did I miss something?
The show's been in my Hulu heaven for awhile; I find the episode count daunting, in such I find it hard to believe there could be enough plot progression/character development in those episodes. It's short enough to complain about but too long for me just to watch it? Maybe I just keep forgetting about it for some reason... That reminds of another problem with this show; the girls' characters are defined by their obsessions which is a bit different from, say, Genshiken. Could you imagine any of them doing what Madarame and Sasahara did, namely enter society on society's terms? I can only picture that sequence from Kanon where the interviewers drag Ayu away. Uguu... There are Otakus, there are Neets then there are these girls, who are just one flaw away from being "socially acceptable" while at the same time, they are proud of being social rejects together. Nothing like combining "she cleans up nicely" together with "just be yourself, by yourself" to kind of create the wrong message for the value of individuality {Something of a pet peeve of mine}. But then again, this is what I got from the manga...
Genshiken took this idea and actually made it interesting and, more to the point, realistic. It's funny that I never made the connection of the Genshiken reboot until your post though. I must be slipping. And moe and pandering. Hyphaneted combination even. Let me see: "I just want to be special" themes, secret hot guy who's interested in the quiet shy girl, small group of friends who take on the Power of Soceity and a showdown of the meek with the alpha bitch {there's one in every social situation, from high school to the workplace}. Pandering abounds, or it seems like it to me and bishonen is moe for girls. It's a different target audience so you're praising a shoujo/josei series for daring to be a shoujo/josei series? |

I agree Mayaya was one of my favorite sisters as well; honestly she has some of the funniest lines in the show. In the snack aisle of the store Mayaya: Whoa I didn't realize they made three kingdom chips! Picks up the package and sees that there is a moe girl on the cover Mayaya: Die a thousand deaths!! That one always makes me laugh 
As for the whole Genshiken comparison thing, I view Genshiken as more of a look at what it is like to be a hardcore (otaku) anime/manga fan (mainly from a male perspective). Princes Jellyfish on the other hand is very different; it is story about female otaku (over things other than anime/manga) that are, as a result, very socially awkward. The emphasis in Princess Jellyfish is more on the insecurities of women and the social pressures that are placed on them to look and act a certain way. |
