Oh man, that was such a good manga, even when you get past my shameless nostalgia for stuff from the glory days of US Shonen Jump. Hotta never really did anything after Hikaru, did she? Shame.

She did a very short lived speedskating (I think) manga in Jump several years ago.

Favorite manga series, I enjoy the game heavily as a hobby... How I'd love to meet her. She seemed to practice go with Yoshihara-5-dan, other pros, and other people around her, based on the comical insert stories in the volumes, and I'd like to know if she kept up with it. It'd certainly be a lifetime opportunity to play a game against the writer of Hikaru no Go, indeed. Smile Unfortunately for me, it very well is probably too soon for me to attend. I don't know how low my kyu level is, not knowing anyone stronger than myself to assess it. Sad I'd rather my skill level be in okay standing before I even consider it. Does anyone know how old she is off-hand? I have no idea just how old that image the AGA used in the original article is, and I'd like to hope that she'd come back to the U.S. for it again, though it is very unlikely, especially considering there's even more of a likelihood of her attending an anime convention as opposed to a rather small go event, the latter of which she's probably frequently included on anyway, considering her proximity to the Nihon Ki'in.

For those that may make plans to go, registration's been open for quite some time now. Take heed that this wouldn't be exactly like an anime convention meet-&-greet, with the actual events themselves being pretty dissimilar. The United States Go Congress is an event solely for players that take the game serious at, at least, an intermediate level. It's not at all private, but with the prices of things being what they are... I wouldn't recommend it to a newbie, or someone just going to see Yumi Hotta. (It'd be a waste of money in that you might not understand exactly what's going on.)

"Viz also released the series on DVD in North America."

This should be changed to: "Viz also released part of the anime series on DVD (episodes 1-48), but never completed its run."

If anything, being that it's the medium under which they actually finished releasing the entire series (aside from the 2004 New Year's movie), the article should mention the iTunes releases ahead of the former DVD releases.

The whole series is available streaming for free on both VizAnime.com and Hulu.com -- those would be good to mention in the article.

And yeah... why hasn't Hotta Yumi (AND the popular Obata Takeshi) ever been invited as Guests of Honor to a U.S. anime convention, I wonder? Most of the big ones still have Go panels (I know for sure Sakuracon had one this year). Because I would DESPERATELY love to meet Hotta Yumi. Hikago is kind of a life-changing series for me, and will be one I'll be able to reread/rewatch every few years for the rest of my life and still find relevant, I think. It'd be so great to hear Hotta Yumi speak about it, and maybe share her ideas on what will happen to the characters in the future.

Anyone here know the folks who plan AX or Otakon? Maybe we can encourage them to look into inviting at least Hotta-sensei to the con this year...[/img]

This sounds awesome.
Hikaru no Go is one of my favorite manga, and I would love to see her... (Although as a previous commenter said, probably wouldn't be a good idea for me to go, knowing nothing about the game of go. Also I live in CA, so it's a little far.)

On a side note, I sort of dropped the series years ago, and only recently finished it. Ironically, it was because a boy in the manga section asked his friend about Hikaru no Go, and his friend told him it was a lame 'mayn-ga' about Japanese chess and was boring.

Immediately, I bought the entire series in some sort of self-serving protest. (Impulse buying at its finest.)
