It's amazing how what was only expected to be another otaku series has become such a sleeper hit. And a good thing too, since it's a great show.
I think it's safe to say that GuP has officially become the Star Wars of Japan; something thought very lowly of in development that beats the odds to become a smash hit (yes, this applies to the original Star Wars. |

I'm sure some people still find it inane otaku fluff and couldn't possibly have nice action or characters. There's no convincing them either.

I saw the first episode when it premiered but I had never heard of it before that since I was barely getting into anime (meaning that I was a bit slow on current news). I had seen advertisement about it an hour or two before I saw the episode, cutting it close lol. Even though I loved the first episode (and every episode after that), I never thought it would become as huge as it has because it struck me as something people would brush off as "moe garbage" or something. Reading Madman and Walw's comments, I was apparently right. I'm glad to see that there seem to me much more people that like it than dislike it. I, of course, love it! Every time I see something new about GuP I want to buy or participate in it so badly! Like the valentines chocolates, Blu-rays, figures, cakes, foods, and everything else lol O already bought both the first Blu-Ray volumes but there's no way I'm buying the hug pillows :p I'm just not into that. Well...I might reconsider when they make one of Mako

I guess it's the sort of show that appeals to the WW2 otaku like myself who loved the little references to events like the battle of Stalingrad and movies like A bridge too far.

It's the references that finally sealed the deal for me as well, no matter how preposterous the setup of the show is. I especially enjoyed the "night before" preparations in episode 10 featuring the girls watching a stack of old school movies. The ones I managed to pick out for the trivia page were Kelly's Heroes (1970), Battle of the Bulge (1965), Patton (1970), and The Bridge at Remagen (1969). Not sure about the last one but the reference to a Russian IS-2 tank was obvious enough. |

I didn't realize until now that Oorai was actually a real town. It sounded like such a fictional town name since the anime's town was actually a big boat and it made sense that it was called "Big Wash" since they were in an ocean.

The large boat is mainly just for the school. The real town of Ooarai was showcased in great detail in episode 4 with the urban battle. An otaku shows several real life locations used in this video though it doesn't show how even characters who appear in the show (like the guy whose shop gets destroyed) are actually modeled after their real life people as well. There is a great love of Ooarai displayed in Girls und Panzer and I'm glad that the town is embracing all the fandom as well, like having a high school military style band performing one of the main themes from GuP at their festival.
Really, all this support is wonderful when you consider that they were hit extremely hard by the tsunamis resulting from the Great East Japan Earthquake. |
