Assuming one copy per person, that would mean roughly one out of every 32 people in Japan is expected to buy a copy.

I've always wondered why they print an additional million copies (which is a lot) compared to the actual sales ? Do they just stock them ? Have them sent to (school) librairies ? Isn't it a waste of money ? Can't they print like 3.1 or 3.2 million and eventually print more later on in case of extra demand ? It would make more sense, no ?

Print runs have large overhead costs; it's far more economical to print extras and store them than to do multiple runs. Since One Piece is so very popular, it'll probably have a fairly significant "tail" after the initial sales storm has died down, so they add a significant buffer to the first print run(the normal risk of overestimating demand doesn't apply as much).

Ok, thanks. ^^

An extra million still seems huge given that the previous volume has yet to crack 3 million and even with a significant 'tail' One Piece isn't exactly the manga equivalent of 'The Dark Side of the Moon' though I guess they are anticipating an expected sales surge when the manga ends (if it does).

They will do what they do now. Store it. At one point in time it WILL sell those 4 Million. Be it in 2 years from now on or 20

Generally, the longer it goes, the more storage fees accrue over time, especially if they keep building up adding more stuff to store. Eventually, it doesn't make economic sense to store so much for so long.

Not to be rude or anything, but why is this news anymore? This is like the fourth time OP gets a 4mill print, there's nothing new about it

So One Piece is less than the manga equivalent of an album that has sold only 50 million copies?

It was a reference to its 741 weeks in the chart (a record I think), not its sales. ^^
