I don't have much to say about this X Button. Ironblood has an interesting cover and what you pointed out reminds me how glad I am that we stopped trying to replace anime-styled covers for games with hideous Western art that didn't have anything to do with the game's content at all. It also reminds me how paranoid and xenophobic companies were back then, thinking anime art was too cutesy and that it was a barrier they simply had to overcome to get kids to buy games. Rolling Eyes

The other day I heard about acttil forming. It's a neat idea where they got their name from (though I'm sure someone will call it cheesy and overly idealistic considering the current state of the industry): acceptance, creativity, teamwork, trust, innovation and love. My friend feels like game companies have lost sight of these values (yes, even love) and it's honestly a no-brainer that currently established ones don't care about these aspects in games anymore. Interestingly, I heard they're intentionally keeping the title of the company lowercase to emphasize humility. I look forward to seeing what acttil will bring.

I know Steam seems to make everyone happy and it's really cool what they take on, but I'm just not a fan of PC gaming and I don't find it very interesting. Still, bringing Ys Origin here, that is forever awesome.

Everyone. Everyone reading this. Forum users.

People.

Buy Analogue: A Hate Story.

I'm looking forward to The Starship Damrey and the other Guild02 games. Crimson Shroud was a cool little RPG even if it did make me want to break my 3DS in frustration a few times.

Thought I'd note that Alice Bradley Sheldon was slightly better known under her other pen-name, James Tiptree Jr. Razz

Well, digital distribution does seem like the best way some older titles can make an official release here. Beats piracy and questionable fan-patches.

Back then? Still happens to this day. Including the old Persona 1-esque race-lifting. American Pokemon also did this stuff as well, and I remember Star Ocean The Last Hope 360 version was heavily altered to remove the anime aesthetic and make it more appealing to anti-anime people in the West.

Same. I only have Steam because I can get Ys and other games like it. I do play a few PC games though, mainly when they're like 2 dollars on a Steam sale so there's no reason not to at least try them out when they're that cheap. That's how I got Mass Effect and Dragon Age. I wouldn't pay full price for PC games though since I'm not into them much.

I second this motion.

Also, I've been finding Crimson Shroud and Liberation Maiden to be oozing with awesomeness (especially for $5 during their sale) - I'm still not entirely sold on Starship Damrey, but I'll drop my cash the exact second Nintendolife gives it a positive review.

....anyone know where I can apply for a job at acttil?

Seriously, Analogue must be experienced!

Thirded. Christine Love is amazing and Analogue...it's not easy to get through, but damn does it leave an impression.

I will point out that Japanese people do not look like anime characters in real life, in case you were mistaken by that notion. So all they really did was shift from anime style to a poorer western cartoon style. Of course the American/Euro version looks terrible, but what can you do.

With Falcom's steady commitment to the PC, many fans are pinning their hopes on more Steam-based RPGs, particularly the partway-localized The Legend of Heroes: Trails in The Sky series.

Uh, except they haven't developed a game for PC in years ... they moved exclusively to PSP and now to Vita and PS3.

How recent is that game you linked? As for Star Ocean LH, where did you even hear that? They just wanted to mix anime style with realism in that game's art and the character models were what the result was. It never had anything to do with "appealing to anti-anime people". Incidentally, I was talking about the past where not one single piece of anime-styled art ever made it past the censors. It's not that like now.

I hope they put Ys on a console other than a handheld again. I know Adol's had some outings on various ones up to the PS2, but after that he's gone handheld exclusive.

Japan doesn't really make that many (non-VN) PC games. You may get the occasional port of a console title, but the vast majority of the Japanese market is VN and western-made titles.

2009. And I was referring to how Last Hope was originally a 360 exclusive and the American version tweaked out the anime art to appeal to the American-focused Xbox audience. The Japanese menus were later restored in the PS3 port of the game.

This isn't the 80's or 90's anymore. Anime is much more recognized and appreciated by the pop-culture crowd than ever before. Sure, it is not mainstream but that shouldn't matter. Fans can and will call bullshit if the Japanese box art gets replaced by some senseless American box art.

I'm also on the "Steam as a good option for seeing interesting Japan indieish games" train. I loved Recettear and Fair Bloom Freesia, both for their low cost and for their level of fun. That and Recettear had some great humor for the RPG player in all of us. We are all looking for the PHAT LEWTZ are we not?
