Given its projected to sell under 1k copies, I doubt it. About the show itself, it was alright. The girls were pretty cute but I didn't care much about the story. It got better in the 2nd half though, when Dee came around. |

I enjoyed this series for the most part, which was a surprise to me because it took me a while to get through it. After the first arc was over, my interest certainly dropped. I didn't care much for the Ortus or Goran Academy arcs, although Uchiyama Kouki kept me going through the latter. I do think that the the 3-4 arc was the best and it had the most emotional impact for me. I definitely cried at the very end when the ending theme started to play. I was satisfied with how things turned out, but it would be nice to get more info on the rest of the world and what happens next.

In contrast to Theron, I personally found Ai to be the big reason why I liked this show so much. Maybe it's just because my moe senses are highly attuned, but to me, her adorableness, kindness, curiosity, and determination, as well as her coming to terms with some of the more unusual moralities of the world, was what really kept me watching this show. The world itself is interesting and the emotional moments are great, but they wouldn't be nearly as great as they were if it weren't through Ai that we were experiencing them.

agreed with stardf, Ai is fundamental in bringing out the nature of the world around her, anyone that simply is so anti-moe that would disregard this series if only due to Ai being the main character simply is missing out.
Unlike most typical moe characters, Ai is earnestly trying to find her place in a world that is at best half full as far as what is presented in the series, she doesn't simply exist as a "cute girl to do cute things" she has a sense of curiosity that wants to make life better for others because it does make her feel better knowing she has done good in this undoubtedly ravaged world that makes up the setting. |

Ortus was the arc I enjoyed the most, as it seemed to have the most consistency in writing. Didn't care much for the second half of the show unfortunately.

Hm, I dropped this show after one episode because I found Ai pretty annoying and felt like it was just trying to seem "deep." I'm thinking that I might've misjudged the show now. I think I'll give it another chance eventually.

I actually went into this show just because it was the only show that even remotely interested me that came out on Tuesday and the idea of a world abandoned by God caught my eye. I was pleasantly surprised by the time episode 3's credits rolled. The rushed feel of that arc in particular felt appropriate in a show exploring spoiler[death in such a way. Sometimes our time together is just too short. The entire audience, Ai, and myself mourned the passing of her father after she had just met him. You wanted to know more of him and see more of him but death as it often does gets in the way.] Before then I was ready to drop the show at any time. I found my relationship with Ai to be more of a guide than as a protagonist. An innocence to experience a world abandoned by God through unbiased eyes. I felt that much of the time she wasn't actually the one driving the story just experiencing it with us as the viewer and then she'd take those tiny hands of hers and just gently tip the plot forward. As for the art I really appreciated the warm oranges and cool blues and purples along with the way they were rendered that to me gave a very appropriate fantasy feel to the whole series. The way that closer was used to play out was just cheating and brilliant and I loved it for it. A surprise favorite during a season full of surprises.[/spoiler]

Fixed that for you. And considering that there's 8 volumes to the LN series, and it's still going, of course there's not going to be a solid conclusion. Why make a gecko ending to something you're ending way early, when there's a) a decent stopping place where you're at, and b) always the chance you could continue. |

I enjoyed the first half of the series with the whole traveling gravekeeper thing, exploring the world.
Then it abruptly went into a school setting with a lot of "typical" characters. After that, it jumps into yet another school setting, just with a little bit of a twist thrown in. There's still some fantasy magic stuff going on, but they basically forgot about the whole gravekeeper aspect of the show. |

I felt the exact opposite to this review: animation and art were the saving grace. The story? The first 2 arcs were great. The premise was really interesting and it had infinite potential for many kinds of stories. Sadly, after Ortus it gets too cliche, and the huge plot holes become more noticeable. Looks like they cut lots of important info from the ranobes, making it too disjointed and confusing at times. And Ai was extremely annoying. Jesus Christ, couldn't stand her at all. She was so selfish and nosy. The rest of the characters were far better.
It had the best ED of the season, tho. |

funny seeing all these conflicting opinions of the series. i actually had trouble watching the series after you-know-who died. once the undead city arc finished i got hooked again, though. by the end of the series i ended up liking Alice a lot more than i thought i would

I'll have to disagree with Theron that Ai's cuteness weighs the series down - yes, "the cutesiness is so completely at odds with the vastly more serious nature of the setting", but that contrast is exactly what makes her so effective in her role to the point I'm not even sure that the series would've worked without her being so clearly out-of-place.
@Niyari: I think just about everybody can agree that the Goran Academy arc isn't exactly the series at its best. |

This was easily my favorite show of the season, with the exception of one possible sequel series. It seems to be the kind of show I thrive on, it doesn't have a whole lot of action, and I'm okay with that. Because the plot, and the atmosphere carried the show.
At first I really didn't know what to expect. At the end of the first episode, I was confused, but intrigued, as I continued to watch it, it began to grow on me, more and more. The first two arcs were amazingly well done, and I enjoyed them to pieces. However, I have to agree that the first school arc, was not all that great in my opinion, and the one shot afterwards was simply okay. But, the final arc was of a good and consistent quality, even if the whole idea of the dead/living did not really come into play as much. I didn't find Ai annoying, nor did I find her cuteness a distraction from the show. I agree with several other posters on here, she was the magnifying class that is used to examine the world and society in which she lives, and I believe she did a great job at it. Going back to the atmosphere of the show, it always made me want to cry for whatever reason. Sure, the show can be sad at times, but even when it wasn't particularly sad, I wanted to cry. The show has a pervasive sense of melancholy that flows through everything that it does, and that might have been what hooked me. Plus, as others have said, the way that the ending song was used as a transitional was fantastic, plus it really is a beautiful song. I really hope more of the novels get adapted, but as for now I will have to satisfy myself with the fact that an OVA is incoming. I might actually purchase this series when it comes stateside. |
