It's just wishful thinking, but it'd be nice if someone would sub-license all the Macross anime (and Southern Cross and Mospeada for that matter) from HG-USA and put out new, remastered sets.

Since AnimEigo is testing out the KickStarter thing now, maybe we could get Robert to see about a dual-audio BD crowdfunded-release of SDF Macross after the BGC/ADP Kickstarters are all resolved.

I'm a lazy fellow so I must admit I find it a pain to have to get up and switch over the disc for a measley 3 episodes. But I never would have thought one disc was dual layered and one was single. I thought they just both held the same so I found it odd they'd cram so much onto one and leave the other with so little.

Thanks for answering my question Smile

Sad to hear that the Japanese import has bad subtitles for Macross Plus.

The Harmony Gold Robotech and Macross thing has been ongoing for years. Think we will be in our graves, before anything has a chance of shifting, if it ever does.

Maybe I'm just tired (I didn't sleep well last night) but I didn't understand that last question's answer at all.

I'm glad I was never into Macross, It's saved me from a lot of headaches and bitter rage over the years. Although, it dose make me wonder what kind of nasty hate-bug crawled up HG butt.

Question Question: Do a lot of Blu-ray Anime releases in Japan come with English Subtitles?

I was under the impression that they rarely did, so I haven't really gotten into importing, but if they do(and there is an easy way to tell), that's going to give me access to a lot of stuff I've been missing out on.

I'm glad you asked it. I just got Psycho-Pass and it is split up like that so I was pretty curious what the reasoning was as well.

Anime Sols, which has regularly struggled with getting enough awareness for its campaigns,

Replace awareness with lazy fans.

Pierrot is unlikely to give the whole crowdfunding idea another shot.

I think they meant crowdfunding future magical girl anime like Mew Mew and Sugar Sugar Rune.

With anime fandom being the size that it is, there are very real limits to how much funding an anime project can hope to achieve.

If it's not on Kickstarter, you mean. Because the fans are too snobby to consider anything which doesn't have a bigger base already.

As I'm sure people in the forums will point out, Discotek has released the entire Fist of the North Star franchise on DVD already.

I think they meant crowdfunding the manga.

Speaking of Anime Sols, though, Mami only has $4,000 left to reach its goal.

Basically to split it an even 6/6 or 7/6 you'd need 2 dual layer Blu Rays. The cheaper option is to put 9 episodes on a dual layer Blu Ray and 3/4 episodes on a single layer Blu Ray.

WTK has a thread in the Retail forum about that.
The first post has a link to a spreadsheet with the information that you need.

It is still rather rare. Maybe one or two TV anime a season.

Bummer that a big name like JS would not recommend the Macross Plus box. I will have to go through the subtitles to check for these issues. Things like that don't bother me because they aren't necessary. The major selling point for myself was the new 5.1ch audio and remastered video, not the English options.

Both of which would likely get more backers than Mami, being newer and more familiar to English-speaking audiences due to translated manga.

I went ahead and pledged for a Creamy Mami set to help out the series' fans. I love Anime Sols for doing what they do.

Here's my question: Studio Pierrot has already made money off of the series because 3 of the boxes have been funded. Are they out any money if they don't get box 4 funded? (Hopefully it will get funded.) It seems a shame for them not to take another chance because 3/4 failed. I could be totally wrong, but doesn't Anime Sols do all the work for them? Or is it a pride thing?

They're not out of money, but they don't want to waste time with flakey fans.

If the support isn't there until the end, they got no incentive to continue it. There already have been enough mahou shoujo failures as is which didn't have to be crowdfunded. So they'd rather get out now, instead of being burned like other licensors. So, in essence, no Mami, no other magical girl stuff. And don't go expecting Sentai-after being burned with Sailor Moon-and/or Discotek to pick up the slack. They're aware of the crappy sales numbers, too. The old-school/specialty shows they pick up are the ones fans are willing to actually pay for, instead of just pirating, while making false promises that they will buy said shows.

It's a collaborative thing. Pierrot provides the art and merch, Sols sells it, translates it, and takes the orders, and Right Stuf prints out the DVDs.
