Ah, this looks interesting. Shame it's mostly a reboot though but any Initial D material is worth watching in my book.

was talking about this series with a friend.

I didn't know about this, until i saw a racing game with Initial D at a local game arcade. The graphic is not that good though.

I looked it up and it's a pretty long running series. It has like 7 seasons?

For someone new to series, where should i start?

Do i need to watch the season 1 to understand the story ? or can i just jump in and watch the movie?

You can just watch the Legend 1 movie, since it adapts the beginning of the manga. It covers the same ground as the first five episodes of the first TV series, only with much better production values.
