Not surprised by this, it was about time for FFXI on consoles to end their service. I mean the game came out in 2002 and really surprised to see it survive that long.

I was surprised that there was anything PS2 still going on at this point. I got out of playing video games after the PS2 due to a lack of free time and never bothered to get further consoles.

This is why I don't play online games. Sooner or later it will all end. I'm surprised that FFXI has lasted this long however they are trying to get people to move towards FFXIV.

I think we all knew this day would come, but I'm really surprised SE didn't do with FFXI what most MMOs do and convert it to a free to play game. At the very least they should have cut the sub fee in half or eliminated the cost of additional characters. If I were to start playing FFXI again I'd be paying more for that than I would for a FFXIV sub. The game became a money maker for SE when the fees log overshadowed the costs of hardware, staff and updates. At this point they should be able to sustain things for a few more years just through the cost of expansions rather than subscriptions.

Wow, PS2. That was a long time ago. Mind you, I still have mine. Was in the middle of playing some games actually, but ended up having to pack it away because of moving.

For me, the XB360 version was something "convenient" I could log into quick to check my auctions from my couch rather than boot my whole PC up. It was highly unplayable due to slowdown in a lot of later areas to the point that I never really put too much time in on there.

The PS2 version was the first I ever played of the game, though the PC and its texture mods is superior both in function and performance. As nostalgic as the novelty of playing FFXI on a PS2 is, there's really no excuse for doing it instead of a PC at this point, so it's not detrimental to the game itself I think.

I dread the part of my soul that WILL die whenever the plug gets pulled though. It's not quite the same Everquest-based MMO I fell in love with back in 2007, but I've yet to play anything that dethrones both its immersion and challenge.

Going free-to-play is an admission of defeat. It's generally when a game has given up and just wants to milk money from as many people as they can before the servers shut down. Once an MMO goes free-to-play the quality drops significantly. FFXI remained successful enough for Square to keep it going all these years.

Again its not shutting down, its extremely cost prohibitive to run on outdated hardware. PC and a mobile version is coming out
