Hate to nitpick a great column, but Boys Be was actually serialized in a shonen anthology.
But like I said, this was quite a good RTO. Interesting about Imadoki 2 being in the Borrow section, yet three is a Buy it. |

I couldnt agree more that Boys Be is A must buy, I've been reading it for about past month (between classes and homework), and I must say I like all the stories that were in the first volume. Well done RTO!!!

On the Tokyopop website it says that DearS is Teen.... Is it really? I've seen the and it really does not seem like it would be rated Teen... o.O
Anyrate, great column this week. Mystical Prince Yoshida-kun sounds a lot like the video game Disgaea, which is just about my favorite thing ever: I'll definately be picking it up.

I don't have my DearS handy, but I received a preview copy so I can't remember if it had the exact age rating on the cover. Even with Ren's riske attire and the stripping teacher, I found DearS quite harmless. Is that what you're wondering about? Or do you think that a Teen rating is too strict? |

You are one of them too?!  Great, so there are two unknown ones left....
Boys Be is known to be "a shoujo manga for boys," depicting how boys (mostly shy ones, to be specific) making their first move. It's good in the beginning, but getting old and tired afterwards. IMHO Salad Days is much better. P.S. The link in Right Turn Only links to the anime of Boys Be. The manga version is here -- not listed in alphabetical index B. |

Yeah, I wish it wouldn't do that. It does it for Berserk and DearS too. It's especially bad for Boys Be... since the manga that Tokyopop released (what's in RTO) is the second Boys Be... It's somewhat misleading to link to the Boys Be... anime because it's actually based off the first Boys Be... manga series, not the second. |

Just read the new column, and really enjoyed it, as I have the others to date.
One note though: don't give up on Swan (the ballet manga by Ariyoshi Kyoko). Yes, it is a little dated - though personally I'm now old enough to enjoy that retro look. And yes, the first few volumes - there'll be 21 in all if CMX completes the series - are stuffed full of definitions of ballet terms, plus factual descriptions of the ballets the characters dance in and snippets on famous dancers of the (then) present and past. At the time she first wrote (the late 1970s) Ariyoshi was attempting to introduce her young Japanese readers to what was then a foreign and little-known art form. However, as the story goes on and readers as well as characters are assumed to know the basics, this didactic element recedes and Swan becomes the tale of a young woman reaching emotional maturity, at the same time as she recognises that her professional ambitions are as legitimate as any man's (revolutionary for Japan thirty years ago). The second part in particular, where Masumi leaves classical ballet and her training in Japan and Russia behind to dance with George Balanchine's New York City Ballet, is also about breaking through personal and cultural barriers to develop a sense of true artistry - still a fairly rare theme in either comics or manga. I plan on sticking with it for sure!
 Swan was actually what pushed me to post that "editorial snippet" at the top of this RTO. I didn't want people to be dissuaded from buying Swan because it really was a decent title. It's just a bit too technical at this point...at least for me...to be pushing it as a "BUY IT! BUY IT NOW!" title. I am looking forward to the later volumes.

Judging from what I've read of Boys Be..., it's more like a girls version of Penthouse. Agree with you on the second Maniac Road though, as the author was really uninspired in this volume. Although I finally appreciate a manga where the girl spurts blood through her nose. As for Swan, it still looks better than From Eroica with Love, which is probably the ugliest manga I've read since Bomber Girl.

Thank you for a great column that really helps readers navigate through the ever-increasing number of manga titles. I find your reviews wonderfully helpful and your comments insightful and very accurate.
Don't give up on Land of the Blindfolded just yet either!!  It originally started out as a oneshot and began to gain enough popularity to become a full-fledged series so the beginning chapters can usually be read as stand-alones-perhaps this may explain the pacing and early disjointedness? It will gradually have more continuity with later volumes and then the series really stands out from the run of the mill typical shoujo. It is powerful, passionate and quite heart-warming without wallowing in melodrama/ridiculous angst and I think you will truly enjoy it!

Eroica, ugly? How are the mighty fallen! Well no, actually, I can understand where you're coming from - Aoike's artwork does take some getting used to, even when you consider that the early episodes date from the High Seventies, when at least a few dandies really did dress almost like that. And starting off as if those three ditzy "super-powered" teenagers were going to be the heroes doesn't help, either. (It's not just new American readers who find Sugar Plum, Leonard and Caesar hard going - I gather quite a few Japanese have trouble getting past their antics, too). But believe me, things do get better as of vol. 2, when Aoike settles down to recording Klaus and Dorian's courtship dance... which is often very funny, and very touching. Oh, and Major Klaus gets to smoke like a chimney, too. Now that's nostalgia. |

Yeah, I read that the author was really surprised that the series was as well received as it was. So I do foresee it getting better. I'll be sure to stick with it! Thanks for all the nice comments guys! I really do appreciate it! I'm glad y'all are liking the way things are going.
