Ghibli's Yonebayashi: 'Next Film Might Be the Opposite of Marnie'

posted on by Sarah Nelkin

Studio Ghibli film director Hiromasa Yonebayashi revealed in a Q&A session during the Animation Festival at the Mitaka City Arts Center that he is interested in doing a film with more excitement for his next project, although he appreciates the quiet of the film When Marnie Was There. He also hinted that the film might be more of a playful one, similar to Ponyo.

After being asked, "When is your next film coming out?,” the director also reminded the audience during the session that there was a four-year gap between his first film, The Secret World of Arrietty, and When Marnie Was There.

Yonebayashi directed When Marnie Was There, which opened in Japanese theaters last July under the title Omoide no Marnie (Marnie of Memory). The film will open with an English dub in North America on May 22.
