Studio Manglobe Begins Bankruptcy Proceedings With 555 Million Yen in Debt

The anime studio Manglobe formally began bankruptcy proceedings with the Tokyo District Court on November 4. 237 parties are claiming 544.5 million yen (about US$4.43 million) in debt from the studio. Manglobe had shut down on September 29 and filed for bankruptcy that same day. Animators reported not receiving their final paychecks from the studio.
Shinichiro Kobayashi and Takashi Kochiyama founded Manglobe in 2002. The studio produced such series as Samurai Champloo, The World God Only Knows franchise, Hayate the Combat Butler franchise, Michiko & Hatchin, Ergo Proxy, Samurai Flamenco, and Gangsta.. It also produced the animated sequences in the Sengoku Basara game. At its peak, it had over 1 billion yen (over US$8 million) in annual revenue.
The studio was working on the Genocidal Organ film before filing for bankruptcy. After delaying this film from October to November, its producers removed the film from their schedule and offered refunds for advance tickets.
