The anime alludes heavily to two of William Shakespeare's most famous plays, Hamlet and The Tempest. Characters regularly quote from these plays.

The pattern formed by the blood in several scenes of Aika's murder is inspired by Shihonkinjichakushoku Kōhakubaizu (Red and White Plum Blossoms), a famous Rinpa-style painting on folding screens by the artist Ogata Korin.
