Macross II actually flopped in Japan and was facing cancellation after episode 4, but because of the interest of U.S. fans, Big West and Bandai Visual finished the series. To some people, Macross II was a blessing in disguise; for if it hadn't been released, co-creator Shoji Kawamori wouldn't have countered it with Macross Plus and Macross 7.
In episode 5, a giant screen plays an animated version of the 1960s British puppet series Thunderbirds. Original Macross creator Shoji Kawamori has cited Thunderbirds as one of his influences.
In episode 6, Tekkaman Blade from the TV series Space Knight Tekkaman Blade (also known in North America as Teknoman) makes a cameo appearance. This was in reference to animation director Masami Obari, who also worked on Tekkaman Blade.
