Plot Summary: In the post-apocalyptic future, large parts of the world have been swallowed up by forests of poisonous fungi. The remaining humans live near the fungus and its monstrous insectoid inhabitants, trying to prevent its spread. One of the human kingdoms, the peaceful Valley of Wind, loves its gentle Princess Nausicaä and her father the king, but their peace is about to be broken, as they are swallowed up in the machinations of their larger, warmongering neighbours. However, Nausicaä has hidden potential, and may yet change the fate of the world.

Comment:
Considered to be Hayao Miyazaki's "Life's Work", Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind, was first published as an ongoing Manga series in Tokuma Shoten's Manga anthology Monthly Animage.
It took over 12 years for Miyazaki to write Nausicaa and for Animage to publish it, it is however important to realize that Miyazaki did not work on Nausicaa constantly over the 12 year period. Several times he put Nausicaa on the side to work on movie projects (including the Nausicaa movie). Over the 12 year period a total of 59 chapters were published, or roughly 5 years worth of Manga.
In mid 1983 Miyazaki stoped working on the Manga to focus on producing the movie. Tokuma Shoten funded production of the film which was done at a studio called Topcraft (Studio Ghibli had not yet been founded).
The finished movie spent aproximately 3 months in theatres. The success of Nausicaa was largely responsible for the creation of Studio Ghibli.
In 1985 an English dub of Nausicaa was released in North America by New World Video. Believing that Nausicaa could not be properly marketed in the United States as it was, New World cut a large amount of the film and re-wrote the story, creating a much more juvenile film. This English version was then released under the name "Warriors of the Wind" and was distributed on VHS by Orion Home Video for several year (until 1995 when the license expired).
Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli were horified by the changes made to the movie. The experience caused Miyazaki to take a hard line on future licenses, requiring that a "no edit" clause be included in all contracts.
Nausicaa was included in the Tokuma / Disney deal and Disney is currently working on an English dub for release sometime in 2004.
