Trivia:

Idris Elba, who is a dedicated video game fan expressed that getting to voice Knuckles was "mind-boggling." As Elba explained, "You and I remember those first early games and now here we are -our sons are like, 'Wow, I can see "Sonic 2" with my dad.' That's special."

When the small hologram of Sonic was shown, he is standing still and is tapping his foot. This is what would happen in the original 16-Bit Mega Drive/Genesis Sonic games if the player doesn't control him and left him idle.

Jim Carrey expressed that he enjoyed exploring Robotnik at his advanced evil side, he explains by saying, "I really had fun thinking about how that could manifest, with his voice; speaking like a synthesizer just because he thinks it's fun, you know. He's really messing with people's minds and creating that gigantic robot out of the scraps of their lives. It was really a fun thing to do; really a cloud of egoic ecstasy."

Colleen O'Shaughnessey admitted she nearly cried when she finally met Jim Carrey in person. She went up to him to introduce herself, and assumed he wouldn't know who she was. Colleen explained the encounter started with her saying, "Hi, I'm Colleen, I play Tails." He grabbed both of my hands, and bent over and went, "I know." "And it was so sweet. He had the sweetest smile on his face, and I was like, "I'm gonna cry." And I know he said something after that, and I'm sure I said things too, but I have no idea beyond that what either of us said." She stated.

The red aeroplane that Tails pilots in the movie is similar to the one he flies in the games, even with the small detail of Sonic standing on top of the wings upon the flight of the plane.

Agent Stone's coffee shop is called the Mean Bean, named after the Sega Genesis game “Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine” (1993). When Stone converts the coffee shop into a Supervillain Lair after reuniting with Robotnik, a large screen displays the Eggman Empire insignia from the more recent games.

Towards the end of the movie, Agent Stone was seen holding up an instruction manual similar to the manuals found in the Sega game boxes such as the Mega Drive. A logo can also be seen that resembles the Sega logo, except it is spelled as “EGG” using the same Sega typeface.

When Sonic calls for Tom in need of help, Tom's ringtone is the Green Hill Zone music score, the first stage in the first Sonic game.

The film's working title is "Emerald Hill", which is the name of the first stage of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” (1992).

During one scene, the song "Barracuda" by Heart was being played. The word Barracuda is also the button sequence (B, A, Right, A, C, Up, Down, A) for the level select code for the game “Sonic 3D Blast” (1996).

The Master Emerald temple uses the same layout from the Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) level "Labyrinth Zone Act 3" in which Sonic is constantly sliding down on water until he finds the switch to break the loop and unveil a secret exit.

One of Robotnik's new Badniks is shaped like a bee or a wasp, giving them a resemblance to the Buzz Bomber, one of the most iconic Badniks of the Sonic games.

The opening scene with Sonic standing on top of a skyscraper and watching several police cars go by below him, is a nod to the opening story scene of the "Chaos in City Square" level in the first Sonic Adventure game. The police cars' sirens even sound almost identical to the ones used in the Adventure games.

The gimmick of Knuckles throwing Sonic like a ball, was an attack move used by the pair in the game “Sonic Heroes” (2003).

The yellow backpack Tails' wears is similar to one his “SatAM Sonic the Hedgehog” (1993) counterpart wore in the season 2 episode 11 “Drood Henge”.

There is a reference to Ben Schwartz's character Jean-Ralphio from “Parks and Recreation” (2009) when Sonic regarded the film “Snow Dogs” (2002) "the wooorst!"

One of the film's posters is a recreation of the “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” (1992) US box art cover, with the only exception of Tails standing behind Sonic rather than standing next to him. While the way Robotnik's hand rests on the number "2" makes it look like he only has four fingers, just like the Robotnik from the said cover art. Also, upon closer expection, is a pair of Knuckles' eyes in the number "2", similar to the “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (1993) US box art cover.

The small multipurpose PDA Tails that invented before meeting with Sonic, known as the Miles Electric was first introduced in “Sonic Unleashed” (2008) as a large tablet. It also has a translation device, and it works about as well as it did in “Sonic Colors” (2010).

At the end of the first movie, Robotnik proclaimed that he'll be back by Christmas. True to his word, the trailer for this movie indeed dropped during the holiday season nonetheless. This was made especially funny with the "He's Back!" proclamations by Agent Stone.

A goat statue can be seen on the counter of the Mean Bean Coffee Shop, this is a reference to how Agent Stone served Robotnik "a latte with steamed Austrian goat milk."
