VHS

Video Home System (VHS) is the standard in Video Cassette Recorders (VCR). When VCRs we're first released in the early 1980s, two competing standard were available, VHS and Betamax (also called "Beta"). Despite being technically superior, Beta went the way of the dinosaur. VHS on the other hand became the standard for home video viewing and recording throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Some tech specs... D-VHS (Digital VHS) is the new standard of VHS, allowing for the recording of 44.4 Gigabytes of data per tape, twice as much as the highest capacity DVD. JVC created this standard as a way to record multi channel sound and digital TV.
