Original Net Anime (ONA)

Where an Original Animated Video (OAV) is Anime created for the direct to video market, Original Net Animation refers to Anime created to be released directly onto the Internet. The term ONA was first coined by the creators of Lingerie Fighter Papillon Rose and Anime News Network decided to adopt it for use in the encyclpedia since
  1. There was no other word to describe this new format of anime and,
  2. We felt "ONA" was an original and appropriate denomination.

Initially, almost all ONAs were fan works or independent releases, however AIC became the first major studio to release an ONA when it released Mahou Yuugi directly onto the internet before allowing it to be shown on TV much later.
