2009 Anime Convention Calendar

by Luke Carroll,

With Perth's Wai-con and Tasmania's Ai-con having just gone by, we at ANN.au have decided to make choosing your next destination that little bit easier by bringing you the Anime Convention Calender, an informative guide listing all the conventions that will be hitting our shores this year.

Anime Convention Calendar 2009

March

Supanova Melbourne – March 27-29
http://supanova.com.au/

Held once again in the Royal Showgrounds, this will mark Supanova's second visit to the great southern state. Bringing with it a refreshed look and a slew of new guests to get your teeth sunk into. It will also mark the first ever preliminary round of Madman's National Cosplay Championship. Check out our visit to the convention last year to get yourself prepared, it's certainly going to be a blast.

Animania Sydney – March 28
http://animania.net.au/2009/

Running once again out of the Citigate Central Hotel, this event marks Animania's first of five stops for the year. All the classic events such as Doodling, Olympia and Karaoke will once again be on show as well as the first preselection round for the World Cosplay Summit Preliminary; so cosplayers get your best acts together and start practising.

April

Supanova Brisbane – April 3-5
http://supanova.com.au/

Using the RNA Showgrounds once again as their base, Supanova will hit the Sunshine State with a bang, vying to make this seventh visit of theirs the best of them all. If previous events are any indication, this year will be packed to the rafters once again so those wanting to get the best of the good on offer should do their best to arrive as early as possible.

Animania Melbourne – April 18
http://animania.net.au/2009/

Held this year once again at the Rydges Hotel, Animania will no doubt be aiming to make this visit their best yet for the Melbourne anime community. As with previous years, Animania's stapled favourites should once again be on board to make this a familiar and enjoyable day out.

May

Animania Brisbane – May 9
http://animania.net.au/2009/

Marking their first of two visits to Brisbane this year, Animania will once again be using the conveniently placed Holiday Inn as their convention hub. Favourites such as Karaoke, Olympia and Cosplay should once again be on for those who need an excuse to get out for the day and mingle with fellow anime fanatics. You can check out what we thought of Animania's last visit here.

June

Supanova Sydney – June 26-28
http://supanova.com.au/

Returning to its birth city after months away, the ever popular Supanova will once again find its home at The Dome in Sydney's Showgrounds. As with every visit, big crowds and new exciting guests are expected to be there, so make sure you get in early to snag a place in line to one of the best anime conventions of the year.

July

Supanova Perth – July 3-5
http://supanova.com.au/

Supanova's final stop for the year will be at none other than Perth's Claremont Showgrounds. Wanting to end the year on a high note, Supanova will no doubt be doing its best to make sure that this visit is an unforgettable one for the Perth fans. New guests and plenty of events are expected, so if you haven't already done so, mark this down on your calendars.

AVCon Adelaide – July 25-26
http://www.avcon.org.au/site/

Adelaide's sole convention for the year is making sure to hit all the right notes this year, bringing the con to the Adelaide Convention Centre for the first time. Boasting twice the floor space, this is promising to be the biggest and best AVCon yet. With all their previous events returning once again along side a larger events theatre, over 30 booths of merchandise vendors and a massive quiz hall, this year's AVCon is going to be hard to thing to pass up for any anime fan.

August

Smash! Sydney – August 8-9
http://www.smash.org.au/

Returning once again to the Roundhouse at the University of New South Wales, Smash! is setting themselves up to bring Sydney alight with two full days of anime fun planned for the masses. Although details are currently thin, much of what was at last years con is expected find its home here as well, so cosplayers, panel goers and artists alike, mark this down in you calendars as a must visit.

Manifest Melbourne – August 21-23
http://www.manifest.org.au/

The sole event for August, Manifest is making sure not to disappoint anybody this year, finally leaving the cramped University of Melbourne for the much more luscious Melbourne Showgrounds. All of Manifest's previous events are expected to make an appearance, with the larger floor space allowing a much larger capacity to enter throughout the days. You can check out what we thought of their event last year here.

September

Animania Sydney – September 5-6
http://animania.net.au/2009/

Held at the Australian Technology Park, this is Animania's biggest event for the year. Spaced over two days, Animania will no doubt be doing its best to improve over the efforts of last year to make this once again a must visit event for anime fans everywhere. The World Cosplay Summit Preliminary Final Round will also be occurring here, so if you have nothing already lined up for that weekend, get your calendars out and mark this down.

Gen Con Oz Brisbane – September 18-20
http://www.genconoz.com/

Arriving to the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre for its second year running, Gen Con Oz is certainly aimed more at those with an added interest in all manners of tabletop and card games alongside pc gaming and anime. Last year drew over a staggering 10,000 attendees, and this is set to be no different. With a fresh outlook and plenty of new ideas, this year will certainly be bigger and better than ever.

Animania Brisbane – September 19
http://animania.net.au/2009/

Arriving to the Holiday Inn once again, this will mark Animania's final stop for the year. All of the staple events you've come to know and love should once again be on display for all to see, so if you didn't manage to make it to the first one earlier this year, do yourself a favour and make sure not to miss this one then.

October

GO3 Electronic and Entertainment Expo Perth – October 1-4
http://www.go3.com.au/

Basing itself out of the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre, GO3 is setting its sights on making its anime presence just a bit larger than previous years. Not only is there going to be four days of cosplay competitions (with over $3000 in prizes to be won), but a dozen screenings and many competitions to tie your time over in between gazes of the latest electronic gear around.

Armageddon Melbourne – October 17-18
http://www.armageddonexpo.com/

Arriving once again to the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, Armageddon will no doubt be setting its sights on making this year just as memorable as the last. Although it's too far out to tell just what special guests will be arriving, all of the events that went on last year will undoubtedly be returning for another go this time, so if you're looking for a fun anime filled weekend out, don't give this a miss.

Not Running

Another unfortunate event is that not all conventions will be backing up from last year. Thankfully there is only one, however we hope that many will join us in the feeling that it is still one too many.
