Galaxy Express 999 Teams Up With Shinkalion Anime Film

posted on by Kim Morrissy

Galaxy Express 999 is teaming up with the Shinkalion film to sell novelty goods. The key visual for the collaboration (shown right) is drawn in a retro anime art style, reminiscent of Galaxy Express 999.

A popup store selling badges and key holders will operate in the Ikebukuro Parco department store in Tokyo and in Osaka's Nanba Marui store from October 11 to 30. The stores will also sell other Shinkalion merch. For more details about the store's lineup, check the Limited Base website.

Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion the Animation is the television anime adaptation of Takara Tomy's Shinkalion toy line. The anime premiered on January 6. The film Gekijō-ban Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion: Mirai Kara Shinsoku no ALFA-X (Shinkansen-Transforming Robot Shinkalion the Movie: The Mythically Fast ALFA-X That Came From Future) will open on December 27.

In the television anime's story, Hayato Hayasugi (his last name is a pun on the words for "too fast") and other children serve as conductors to pilot the Shinkalion. The children must work together with the adults of the "Shinkansen Ultra Evolution Institute" (SUEI) to defeat a monster that looks like a jet black bullet train.

The Shinkalion robots are various models of real-life Japanese bullet trains (shinkansen) that transform into robots to fight an unknown evil to protect the safety and peace of Japan.

The original Galaxy Express 999 manga by Leiji Matsumoto ran from 1977-1981 and the 113-episode television anime series aired from 1978-1981. An anime film alternate retelling premiered in 1979. The franchise then spawned multiple other movies, specials, and OVAs.

The story of the anime and manga follows a young orphan named Tetsurō as he travels with a mysterious woman named Maetel through the galaxy on a space train, in the hopes of obtaining a cybernetic body. The train stops at many planets along the way, often leading to adventures for the two.
