Fan Launches Anime Love Hardcore Cover Album in U.S.

Songs legally licensed from Card Captor Sakura, Gurren Lagann, Eva, North Star

Oregon anime fan Pete Ellison, also known as the DJ Initial P, launched an Anime Love Hardcore album with remixed covers of popular anime theme songs earlier this year. ANN confirmed that the Portland-based producer and DJ acquired legal licenses to all the songs on the album, which include "Catch Me Catch You" from Card Captor Sakura, "Sorairo Days" from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" from Neon Genesis Evangelion, "Heart of Madness" from Fist of the North Star, and others for a total of 10 tracks.

Acquiring the licenses to the songs was not difficult but involved "boring paperwork," according to Ellison, who said that the most difficult part of producing the CD was finding singers for the covers. There were other limitations involved: only certain songs were available to be licensed, and Ellison can only sell the album in the United States.

Ellison said that he got into anime while working at a video store as a teenager, and began performing as a DJ at age 15. He launched Disko Warp in 2005, which he now operates full-time, and has released a number of original and cover/remix CDs since then, as well as providing some mixes for the rhythm video game franchise Dance Dance Revolution. Ellison describes Disko Warp as a "fixture" at Seattle's Sakura-Con and Portland's Kumoricon, and he created the Anime Love Hardcore album so as to have anime songs to include in his sets at these events.

The album is available on the Apple iTunes Store and on the official Disko Warp website.
