8-Meter Hello Kitty on Display at Tokyo's Odaiba

posted on by Gia Manry
Video streamed of display that celebrates Sanrio's 50th, promotes tree-planting

Sanrio has put an 8-meter-tall (about 30-feet-tall) balloon statue of its character Hello Kitty on display on Tokyo's artificial island of Odaiba from August 9 to 22. The statue is surrounded by 28 balloons portraying other Sanrio characters, including My Melody, Cinnamaroll, Kiki & Lala, and others. Throughout the day, a water fountain show takes place periodically, and at night the fountains are joined by laser lights.

The display's purpose is two-fold: to celebrate Sanrio's 50th anniversary (the company was founded on August 10, 1960) and to promote urban tree-planting. Proceeds from the local sale of Hello Kitty goods will go to related charities.

A videographer named "darwinfish105" has uploaded time-lapse footage of the Hello Kitty display onto the YouTube website:

This user also posted footage of the 18-meter-tall (59-feet-tall) "life-size" Gundam statue that was displayed at Odaiba last summer for the 30th anniversary of Gundam. That statue is currently on display in the central Japanese city of Shizuoka.
