Kill Bill's Kuriyama Makes Gintama Cameo in Elizabeth's Mouth

Battle Royale actress Chiaki Kuriyama inserted in Gintama anime to promote song

Battle Royale/Kill Bill actress Chiaki Kuriyama not only sang the newest opening theme song for the Gintama anime, but she also made a special cameo within the anime itself on Monday — inside the mouth of the character Elizabeth.

Since April 5, TV Tokyo and its affiliates have been broadcasting Yorinuki Gintama-san, a re-airing of selected Gintama anime episodes with new opening and ending theme songs. On Monday, Yorinuki Gintama-san debuted Kuriyama's "Kanōsei Girl" song as its latest opening theme. Acclaimed guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei wrote and arranged the song; Kuriyama and Hotei had never collaborated directly together before, although Kill Bill featured Hotei's signature song "Battle Without Honor or Humanity."

To promote the "Kanōsei Girl" song, Kuriyama appeared within the Yorinuki Gintama-san anime episode itself on Monday. In the last segment of the episode, her face appeared in the mouth of Elizabeth. Kuriyama also voiced a line of dialogue: "Kannōsei Girl, yoroshiku onegai shimasu!" ("Please enjoy 'Kanōsei Girl'!")

The CD single with "Kanōsei Girl" will ship in Japan on November 17. Kuriyama made her singing debut earlier this year with "Ryusei no Namida," the theme song for the first volume of the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn anime. Section23 Films is releasing the Gintama anime in North America, while Viz Media is publishing the original manga.
