Apple Approves Counterfeit Pokémon iPhone/iPad App

App loads title before crashing; seller also offer unauthorized Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh! apps

A developer who goes by the name "Home of Anime" began selling a counterfeit, non-running version of the Pokémon Yellow game in Apple's App Store on Friday. The app only loads the title screen before crashing on iOS devices such as the iPhone and iPad. Its preview uses screenshots from a more recent Pokémon game instead of the Pokémon Yellow game from 1998. It has received over 1,300 reviews, averaging 1.5 out of 5 stars.

The seller, listed as "Daniel Burford," also began offering counterfeit versions of Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh! on Friday.

Pokémon Yellow first shipped in Japan in 1998, and then in North America a year later. It sold 600,000 copies in its first week of release. Peter Main, Nintendo's executive vice president of sales and marketing said that the game was "the best-selling game in America... for any handheld video game system" in 2000.
