Gundam's Yasuhiko Joins Manga Creators to Draw Charity Art

posted on by Ko Ransom
8 artists' character drawings auctioned to support quake recovery

On April 3, Mobile Suit Gundam character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko appeared at a special edition of the live drawing event "Saibara Rieko no Jinsei Garyoku Taiketsu" ("Rieko Saibara's Drawing Showdown") hosted by Kaasan - Mom's Life manga creator Rieko Saibara. Illustrations that Yoshihiko and other manga artists created at the event are being auctioned on the Japanese Yahoo! Auctions website, and the listings will close on Sunday.

The other six participating manga creators were Keisuke Itagaki (Grappler Baki), Nobuyuki Fukumoto (Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji), Mari Yamazaki (Thermae Romae), Risa Itou (Higepiyo), Kazuhiro Fujita (Ushio & Tora), and Sensha Yoshida (Utsurun Desu). Yoshihiko (art pictured above right) and the other manga artists drew the character illustrations on shikishi cardboard squares. Money raised in the auctions will be donated to volunteer and non-profit organizations that are helping with Great Eastern Japan Earthquake (Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) disaster recovery efforts. Donations were also collected online during the show's live stream on the Nico Nico Douga video sharing website.

The drawing event took place in Mt. Rainier Hall in Tokyo's Shibuya ward. The guests jovially talked to each other while drawing a variety of characters, but only one of each artist's illustrations is being auctioned. Yasuhiko's drawings included Fukumoto's character Kaiji from the Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji manga, Heidi from the Heidi, Girl of the Alps television anime series, and Pikachu from the Pokémon franchise.
