Elizabeth Olsen Comments on Oldboy Remake in Interview

Liberal Arts actress discusses differences due to location, technology

In a recent interview with the Empire film magazine, actress Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene, Liberal Arts) spoke about Spike Lee's remake of Chan-wook Park's live-action film Oldboy.

In the interview, Olsen notes that the film is "going to be a different story, just because one: it takes place in a non-descript city in America and two: it's ten years later, so technology is different, so there's just really practicalities that have had to change."

Olsen added that the remake is "not trying to redo the film – it's coming at it from a different point of view. As well as focusing on the primary source of the Korean film, for our film there's a Japanese manga ... so we're using the primary source of the illustrated novel, really."

In the below recording, the discussion about Oldboy starts at 51:47.

Oldboy will start filming in October, and Empire notes that it is slated for a release in 2013.

Actor Josh Brolin (Milk, Men in Black 3), actor Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team), and Olsen have been attached to the remake, which is itself an adaptation of Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi's manga.

The Los Angeles Times reported last month that actor Samuel L. Jackson (Jungle Fever, Pulp Fiction, The Avengers) has joined the cast as a man tortured by the main character, and Grammy-winning musician Bruce Hornsby (Red Hook Summer) will compose the film's score. Actor Nate Parker (Red Tails, Red Hook Summer, The Secret Life of Bees) is also in negotiations to play a role.

The entertainment trade magazine Variety earlier described the Korean film's story about "a man who's kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years. When he's finally released and begins looking into the reason for his captivity, he soon finds out that his kidnapper has even more torturous plans for him." (The original manga has the protagonist imprisoned for a different number of years and does not have the Korean film's added plot twist ending.)
