Wataru Watanabe's story of high school otaku-turned-racer also has TV anime in 2013

This year's 14th issue of Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine is revealing on Thursday that Wataru Watanabe's 29th Yowamushi Pedal manga volume will have a limited edition with an original anime DVD on August 8. The magazine had already announced last December that the manga is inspiring a television anime this year.

The story centers around Sakamichi Onoda, a high school otaku who loves figures from anime and games so much that he would ride his commuter bicycle to and from Tokyo's Akihabara shopping district in a 90-kilometer (about 60-mile) round trip over steep slopes. Onoda ends up joining the competitive sport of bicycle racing.

Watanabe launched the manga in the magazine in 2008, and Akita Shoten will publish the 27th compiled book volume on Friday. The manga already inspired a stage play that ran in Tokyo last year.
