Sega Hardware Inspires Sega Hard Girls Novel, Oreimo Crossover

Hatsune Miku's Kei turns consoles into goddesses; Kirino & Kuroneko serve as Sega mascots

On Wednesday, publishing imprint Dengeki Bunko announced a collaboration with video game publisher Sega as one of the projects celebrating Dengeki's 20th anniversary. The first stage of the project is Sega Hard Girls Story, a Sega-themed novel serialization in Dengeki Bunko Magazine. The novel re-imagines the various Sega game systems as goddesses who appear all over modern Japan.

The characters — Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, Mega Drive/Genesis, Game Gear, and Master System (pictured above from left to right) — were all featured before in the Samurai & Dragons PS Vita game's "Segakko 13 ~Yume Kanaeshi Mono" event, as well as on T-shirts and other goods. Kei, the original illustrator of the girls and the artist famous for designing Hatsune Miku, is returning to create updated illustrations for the novel, while Tōru Shiwasu (Boku to Kanojo no Game Sensō) is writing it.

The novel begins in a shrine not far from the Haneda Airport where high school boy Takeo Kanbara's father is the priest. Takeo's father summons Takeo and his sister Yui after school one day. Waiting for them is a middle-school girl, who his father says will be living with them for a little while — and he adds that she is a goddess.

The novel will begin serializing in Dengeki Bunko Magazine's 32nd issue on June 10.

As the second part of the collaboration, the Oreimo light novel series' Kirino and Kuroneko are dressing up in Sega outfits. They will be showing up as mascots and promotional team leaders on illustrations at Sega arcades throughout Japan.
