Nintendo confirms 3DS & Wii U Virtual Console titles for the West

Wednesday morning's live-streamed Nintendo Direct conference confirmed that the Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, Earthbound, and Guild02 games will be coming to North America.

The Bravely Default: Flying Fairy role-playing game is slated for the Nintendo 3DS next year. Square Enix collaborated with Naotaka Hayashi, scenario writer for 5pb.'s Robotics;Notes, Steins;Gate, and Chaos;HEAd games, to create Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. The game shipped in Japan on October 11, and Square Enix had hinted last month that the staff is paying attention to foreign fans' voices.

The Earthbound (Mother 2) RPG will be a downloadable title on the Wii U this year. The original Mother game was released for the Nintendo Famicom (Nintendo Entertainment System) in 1989, followed by its sequel, Earthbound (Mother 2: Gyiyg no Gyakushū) in 1994. Shigesato Itoi, the director, designer, and original creator for the Mother game franchise, had talked about a "Mother re-release" effort last December.

Like Guild01, Guild02 is a collection of 3DS games from leading creators that will be available for download:

  • The adventure-suspense game The Starship Damrey (Uchūsen Damrey-Gō) by Kazuya Asano and Takemaru Abiko (Kamaitachi no Yoru)
  • The "survival panic action" game Bugs vs. Tanks! (Mushikera Sensha) by Keiji Inafune (Mega Man), in which players pilot a small tank and fight bugs
  • The retro monster game Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Story (Kaiju ga Deru Kinyōbi) by Kaz Ayabe (Boku no Natsuyasumi)

The Guild02 games have no date announced yet.

Nintendo also confirmed that it will offer the same Animal Crossing: New Leaf bundle with a Nintendo 3DS XL system in North America that Japan received last November. The bundle will retail for US$219.99.
