Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet Hosts Original Character Design Contest

posted on by Sarah Nelkin
Winner of pixiv contest will have design appear in anime's final episode

The Japanese art site pixiv is hosting a character design contest for the Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet television anime series. Those who are interested can submit a character design for a person who would be a member of the crew of the Gargantia vessel. Director Kazuya Murata and the Production I.G animation staff will judge the entries, and the winning design will appear in the final episode of the anime. The winner will also receive Gargantia-related merchandise.

Those who wish to participate must be a member of pixiv and must tag their artwork with the "ガルガンティア乗組員" (Gargantia Crew) tag. The deadline is May 12 at 11:59 p.m. pixiv has also listed the full contest rules. The official contest page is also hosting entries that have already been submitted.

The story of the anime begins in the distant future in the far reaches of the galaxy. The Human Galactic Alliance has been constantly fighting for its survival against a grotesque race of beings. During an intense battle, the young lieutenant Red (played by Kaito Ishikawa) and his humanoid mobile weapon Chamber are swallowed up into a distortion of time and space.

Waking from his artificially induced hibernation, Red realizes that he has arrived on Earth, the long forgotten planet. On this planet that was completely flooded by the seas, people live in fleets of giant ships, salvaging relics from the seas' depths in order to survive.

Red arrives on one of the city fleets called Gargantia. With no knowledge of the planet's history or culture, he is forced to live alongside Amy (Hisako Kanemoto), a 15-year-old girl who serves as a messenger aboard the Gargantia fleet. To Red, who has lived a life where he knows nothing but fighting, these days of peace continue to surprise him.

The science-fiction anime premiered in Japan on April 7, and Crunchyroll is currently streaming the series outside of Japan.
